Taliban threatens to kill 23 Korean hostages

The Taliban has threatened to kill 23 South Korean hostages held in Afghanistan, as security forces surround the building where they are being held captive.

The 23 hostages were abducted on Thursday

Afghan and US troops have arrived at the complex in the southern province of Ghazni where officials believe the South Koreans - Christian evangelists - are being held, an Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman said.

The soldiers have cordoned off the area and are awaiting orders, but so far there had not been any engagement, he added.

The Taliban has responded aggressively to the action.

"If there's any military action against us, we'll kill the hostages," Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi said.

Mr Ahmadi confirmed that the extremist movement was in negotiations with the government over the fate of the hostages.

The Koreans, who are from an evangelical Christian group that was on an aid mission to Afghanistan, were abducted from a bus travelling from Kandahar to Kabul on Thursday.

The Taliban want to swap the 23 men and women for jailed fighters, and are also demanding that South Korean forces leave Afghanistan.

A team of hostage negotiators arrived in Kabul from Seoul earlier today.

The police chief of Ghazni province, Alishah Ahmadzai, said talks were being held with the Taliban through tribal elders and religious leaders.

"I hope we get good results," he said.

Given past events, I can’t imagine why a group of Korean Christians (esp most of them being women) would even be in Afghanistan. That said, I must ask why is it that these “spokesmen” for the taliban are still breathing?

Taliban threatens...

That's the dogma of terrorism.

Some are compelled by belief to talk to them and come to reasonable terms with them to stop the death and mayhem that THEY have created.

It "ain't" gonna' work.

"Friends" like the ROK military, we should be glad they have. ROK ROEs are likely to be a bit more "relaxed" than US or UK.

Most people tote a mindset like yours and wouldn't understand personal devotion that the likes of these Koreans tote.

"That's the dogma of terrorism."

Exactly. Our Karma must run over their dogma.
The terrorists must learn that every threat they make will leave their families and towns
totally converted to dust.
Only then will they back off.

In the words of Caligula, "I don't care if they hate us, as long as they fear us."

Are you confusing personal devotion with ‘martyr syndrome?’

...the South Koreans - Christian evangelists - are being held,...

South Korea...a country with a large number of Christians.
And I was suprised when The Los Angeles Times actually printed an
good article about a Christian evangelist (from Germany?, Sweden?)
that was working with South Korean Christians to try to evangelize North
Korea.
One of their exploits was attaching radios with a frequency dial
to ballons and letting them drift into North Korea so that the
strays might find their way into the hands of the suffering masses
of North Korea.

(IIRC, legal radios in North Korea have no frequency selector...
they are preset to the official guvmint station).

Another interesting tidbit in that LA Times article...
before the Communists took over, Pyongyang (sp?) of North Korea
had so many Christian houses of worship that it used to be known
as "The Jerusalem of Asia".

When I read the article, all I could think was that the propaganda
officers at The Los Angeles Times must have headed to happy hour
and some un-monitored grunts actually let the article go to press.

I remember in '66 when the VC hit a 100th ROK unit at night. The ROKs then pursued them throughout the night until the finally caught them and disposed of them.

Reputations go a long way.

If these S. Korean hostages are murdered by the Talibanis, then they can look forward to a South Korean expeditionary force dispatching itself to Afghanistan. The Chi-com supported VietCong feared Korean units for good reason during the VN war. They were downright inhumanly ruthless against the VC.

Killing even one of these hostages would be the biggest mistake the Taliban ever made.

Go look at the ASSOCIATED PRESS version of this currently running on Yahoo . . .

You would NEVER KNOW that they are CHRISTIANS!

Far be it from the Islamo-philes at the AP to report the story accurately:

Once again, members of That Great and Peaceful Religion of Islam are showing us that NOTHING has changed since they slaughtered, raped and pillaged their way across the then Christian Middle East . . .

When the hell - if ever - are we all going to wake up to the inherent violence and genetic barbarism of Islam?

A false religion spawned by a false "prophet."
