Out of Britain, Firebrand Sheik Takes New Tone in Lebanon
New York Times ^ | July 21, 2007 | HASSAN M. FATTAH

THERE was a time when Omar Bakri Mohammed embodied every stereotype of the jihadi extremist. From his perch in London, he threw around words like “kafir”— infidel — to describe Christians and Jews, and he openly praised the attackers of Sept. 11.

But sitting recently in his new library overlooking the scenic Mount Lebanon in this northern city, with a bloody battle raging at a Palestinian refugee camp a few miles away between the Lebanese Army and Fatah al Islam, a group inspired by Al Qaeda, Mr. Bakri presented himself as a changed man. Whether the shift is as meaningful as he asserts is an open question.

He speaks of peace, decrying the unnecessary use of violence and emphasizing the sanctity of life. The death of innocents, he says, has to be curtailed.

“I want to support Muslims by saving their blood and their life,” Mr. Bakri said, as he began outlining his efforts to help negotiate a settlement to the standoff in the camp. “My job is to calm the fighting and to open a dialogue.” His belief in radical Islam remains the same.

Mr. Bakri grew to infamy after the suicide bombings of London’s transportation system in 2005, when he and a group of other radical imams who had been preaching in mosques became lightning rods for the creeping extremism of some young British Muslims.

Most of us aren't gullible as the New York Times. Bakri is an enemy of the West and freedom. He practiced taqiyyah to pull the wool over the eyes of a liberal journalist. "Changed man," my ass. This guy is a scorpion and nothing will ever change his true nature.

He’s only upset that Muslims are killing Muslims.

I doubt he has any problem with Muslims killing Kaffir (infidels).

When the struggle is waged with verbal bombastics, Bakri is in his element. When it is waged, just down the street, with RPG’s and Kalashnikovs, Mr. Bakri becomes Dag Hammershold. I remember how he viciously criticized the Brits. When they decided to deport him he weeped and whined.
