Forrest's soldiers loved him. His fellow generals admired him. His enemies were terrified at the mere mention of his name. Gen. Robert E. Lee said of his finest subordinate commanders, the most remarkable was one he "had never met" Forrest. And U.S. and foreign military officers alike have studied Forrests campaigns over the decades since the end of the war. It has even been speculated that some aspects of the German Blitzkrieg were patterned after some of Forrest's operations.

“Forrest was an unprecedented cavalryman and commander - much better than Sheridan.”
Even Wm. T. Sherman agreed with that assessment.
Even if I’m cautious with Wikipedia...
I’ll go with their assessment of Forrest’s legacy as “mixed”.
But I’m glad you put up this thread because it got me to read his “Farewell
Address” to his Confederate soldiers.
That is one heck of a great departure speech, especially for the side
that had to accept a loss.
I had forgotten Foote's comment on Forrest. And yes Forrest kept the "skeer" on Sherman.
I believe General Lee said of Forrest, ""A man I have never met, General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Accomplished more, with fewer troops than any other officer on either side."
The claim, though was that the later testimony of Confederate officers confirmed massacre. I would be interested in reading those claims.
It is indeed.
Perhaps it’s the liquor talking.
And the only way the yankess could lay a glove on him was to libel his honor, from then until this very day.
Which of course, only dishonors the scum that pick up that filty glove.
LOL!
You are SO right!
I've believed all along that stand watie speaks from pure ignorance rather than as a result of alcohol or any other chemicals.

Bump. Any "atrocities" that occurred at Ft. Pillow were the blame of stupid Union commanders. Forrest was a soldier and a gentleman, a man of his word. Many of his former slaves served under him, refusing to leave. Often charged with creating the klan the opposite is true - Forrest did not create it, but he did call for it to be dismantled. After the war Forrest worked to improve relations, evidenced in part by the speech he made to the "Pole Bearers" cited previously. I think it says volumes that that group invited him to speak and present him with flowers of appreciation.
The comments made by ignorant posters on this thread are ample evidence of the power of brainwashing. The character of many good Southern men have been tarnished, simply to paint them as some unworthy opponent. For me, I'll take the words of a black Mississippi congressman John F. Harris anyday (1 Feb 1890):
I am convinced that had he [a political opponent] seen what I saw at Seven Pines, and in the Seven Day's fighting around Richmond, the battlefield covered with the mangled forms of those who fought for their country and for their country's honor, he would not have made the speech. When the news came that the South had been invaded, those men went forth to fight for what they believed, and they made no requests for monuments. But they died, and their virtues should be remembered. Sir, I went with them. I, too, wore the gray, the same color my master wore. We stayed four long years, and if that war had gone on till now I would have been there yet. I want to honor those brave men who died for their convictions.Kudos to Gen. Forrest and the brave men who sacrificed all.
No I'll be the first to admit that when you spout your nonsense, you spout with pride and in spite of all evidence to the contrary. And your refusal to provide any verifiable source for you claims is as consistant as anything.
btw, be sure and remind everyone that you are "an expert" on EVERY subject, i.e., a "know all".
i have to say though that you & the rest of the coven are DAMAGING the unionists with every DUMB-bunny, SILLY, post that any of you make.
fyi, i got an email over the weekend from a lady from NJ.===> she said: I don't often agree with you, as my ancestors all wore blue, but at least you aren't an idiot like the members of "the coven". Mostly I just laugh at them.

His men were armed with that damn Yankee rifle you load in the morning and shoot all day.
When you spout your idiocy about Lee being poor and without slaves when reputable sources like Douglas Southall Freeman and the Library of Congress show otherwise; when you claim Stand Waite was a dirt-poor Indian when his own and his wife's correspondence show he was a wealthy slave-owner; when you flap your yap about 100,000 plus Black confederate soldiers when nobody in their right mind agrees with you, then you're doing nothing but demonstrating your ignorance and not our's.
Your sources don't even rise to that level. Unidentified employees at the Fortress Monroe museum, odd relatives, books and periodicals that don't even exist, that's what you offer.
