I’ll go with their assessment of Forrest’s legacy as “mixed”.
But I’m glad you put up this thread because it got me to read his “Farewell
Address” to his Confederate soldiers.
That is one heck of a great departure speech, especially for the side
that had to accept a loss.
I had forgotten Foote's comment on Forrest. And yes Forrest kept the "skeer" on Sherman.
I believe General Lee said of Forrest, ""A man I have never met, General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Accomplished more, with fewer troops than any other officer on either side."
The claim, though was that the later testimony of Confederate officers confirmed massacre. I would be interested in reading those claims.

Bump. Any "atrocities" that occurred at Ft. Pillow were the blame of stupid Union commanders. Forrest was a soldier and a gentleman, a man of his word. Many of his former slaves served under him, refusing to leave. Often charged with creating the klan the opposite is true - Forrest did not create it, but he did call for it to be dismantled. After the war Forrest worked to improve relations, evidenced in part by the speech he made to the "Pole Bearers" cited previously. I think it says volumes that that group invited him to speak and present him with flowers of appreciation.
The comments made by ignorant posters on this thread are ample evidence of the power of brainwashing. The character of many good Southern men have been tarnished, simply to paint them as some unworthy opponent. For me, I'll take the words of a black Mississippi congressman John F. Harris anyday (1 Feb 1890):

No I'll be the first to admit that when you spout your nonsense, you spout with pride and in spite of all evidence to the contrary. And your refusal to provide any verifiable source for you claims is as consistant as anything.

When you spout your idiocy about Lee being poor and without slaves when reputable sources like Douglas Southall Freeman and the Library of Congress show otherwise; when you claim Stand Waite was a dirt-poor Indian when his own and his wife's correspondence show he was a wealthy slave-owner; when you flap your yap about 100,000 plus Black confederate soldiers when nobody in their right mind agrees with you, then you're doing nothing but demonstrating your ignorance and not our's.
Your sources don't even rise to that level. Unidentified employees at the Fortress Monroe museum, odd relatives, books and periodicals that don't even exist, that's what you offer.
