Lots of people like looking at animals in zoos. Lots of people also like eating meat. However the thought of the two things together tends to turn most people's stomachs.
Now that's what I call a nice lede.

If you have critters that can (and do) breed in captivity, then you need to do something with the excess critters

I hope there is more at the link.
Why do I have a suspicion that the perps (employees) are not native Germans?
Wonder who they sold the meat to?
Guesses, anyone?

“The city of Erfurt quickly stepped in to the growing scandal, announcing on Thursday that zoo director Norbert Neuschulz had been relieved of his duties.” What was he supposed to do with them? Bury them in a pet cemetery? The city of Erfurt doesn’t deserve a zoo if they are going to be so prissy. They can watch wild kingdom on TV instead.

Employees at the Erfurt zoo, it was revealed Wednesday, have for years been killing animals and selling their meat for zoo stew. Germany is outraged. And I'm laughing. Where do these people think meat comes from?
Everyone should have to kill and butcher at least one meal in their lifetimes.

Germany is outraged. I seriously doubt it. The WRITER is outraged, but not the country and he gives no indication of this in the article. Picks, deer and goats deserve to be eaten. That's what they're for!

ducks, quails and even guinea pigs were also involved. I love duck and quail. Never tried the G-pig, though. Not a lot of meat on one, I suspect.
