One in four Israeli men dodges the draft

One in four Israeli men eligible for national service last year dodged the draft, the highest proportion in the history of the Jewish state.

Figures released yesterday by the Israeli Army showed that in the 2006 intake, just 75 per cent of eligible men joined up. The figures date from before last year's Lebanon war, widely viewed in Israel as a failure, and there are worries that this year's numbers could show an even greater rate of non-participation.

The declining participation rate in a country that since its foundation in 1948 has repeatedly had to use its army to fight for its existence led to strong criticism from officers inside the Israeli army.

"Israeli society has to condemn draft dodgers," an unnamed officer said. "This is not just a military matter, but a social issue as well. Those who do not shoulder their share of the burden have to be made to feel ashamed."

Israeli men can avoid service in several ways. The growing number of Ultra-Orthodox Jews have special dispensation to continue religious studies, while convicted criminals are barred from serving, as are the ill and infirm.

But some young Israelis travel overseas beyond the reach of the army authorities and there is some evidence of people pretending to have mental illness to avoid service.

There have been calls to reverse the decline either by limiting exemptions, or by allowing those with a criminal record to enlist.

The reduced levels of participation reveal a change in attitudes among young Israelis as the memory of the country's early days, surrounded by hostile, aggressive Arab neighbours, becomes more distant.

With peace treaties signed with Egypt and Jordan, the imminent sense of threat is not as strong for today's young Israelis as it used to be.

just like that former gov of Arkansas who went to oxford. there has always been draft dodgers they don’t want to risk their precious lives or lifestyle for a country they really do not love, for people they do not respect, or for common morals and beliefs that they mock.

Since they won't be able to return to Israel for two decades or so, those fleeing to Canada might be a better example. Included in the emigrees are a number of kids whose family simply left Israel, and they neglected to give up their citizenship in the 6 month window before their 18th birthday, thus are subject to serve if they return. Like here in the US, the overwhelming of "dodgers" are medical or educational.

The vast majority of Israelis, men and women do serve. Its a country small enough where the sight of armed soldiers hitchhiking and riding on busses isn't that unusual.

Catch 22. You can leave the war behind and go home if you are crazy. You are not crazy if you want to leave the war behind and go home.

As a practical matter, I’m not sure one can be employed at a “good” job in Israel, if you did not serve in the IDF, so I don’t think this is much of a problem. (This is actually one of the reasons there are now units that cater to Haredi.)

My nephews are now both IDF -— one mobile artillery; the other a grunt -— both from Texas.

If we had a draft in this country and only lost 25 percent due to criminality, health problems, and various dodging schemes, I’d say we would be doing better than expected.

If this story is true, this may be the beginning of the end for Israel. Twenty-five percent is a huge ratio of malingerers for a tiny country surrounded by numerically superior implacable foes bent on genocide. Israel's survival has been based on three legs: technological superiority, fighting spirit, and the strategic support of the USA. Of the three, the fighting spirit was perhaps the most important. As the OBAMA/Ellison/Reid/Durbin wing of the Democratic Party appears poised to take power, the unqualified American strategic support is no longer guaranteed. Indeed, a United States led by appeasers, pacifists, and defeatists will hardly be able to help itself, let alone Israel. The Israeli technological edge may be disappearing as the Chinese and some Europeans eagerly arm the Iranians.
