Rugged American individualism could hinder our ability to understand other peoples' point of view, a new study suggests.
And in contrast, the researchers found that Chinese are more skilled at understanding other people's perspectives, possibly because they live in a more "collectivist" society.
"This cultural difference affects the way we communicate," said study co-author and cognitive psychologist Boaz Keysar of the University of Chicago.
Simple study
The study, though oversimplified compared to real life, was instructive. Keysar and his colleagues arranged two blocks on a table so participants could see both. However, a piece of cardboard obstructed the view of one block so a "director," sitting across from the participant, could only see one block.

Sorry but I don’t understand the “collectivist” point of view. Effort and success should be compensated.
The point of view I do not understand is why people come here with ideas other than becoming part of this culture and assimilating as such. And why we need to be forced to tolerate those who would alter our culture to fit a “collectivist” or “multicultural” environment.
What made America great is not the adaptation of our society to fit all those who would be a part of it, but rather the folks who come here becoming Americans in every sense of the word.

This article is a stunning display of stupidity and propaganda.
A more rational explanation is that the Americans chosen were so “wimpified” that they did not want to volunteer to move the block. The Orientals heard an order and were conditioned to obey.

That’s because our range of thinking is much larger than the general chinese’s. Their collectivist society has destroyed their individual thoughts. Therefore it is easier for them to understand other people in their society, whereas we have been allowed to think freely and individually for so long that our range is much bigger. Resulting in making it a bit more difficult to comprehend all of the other folks thinking....
Yeah...it interferes with the multi-national corporations ideas of what’s good for all of us..including ditching the Constitution.....
Americanism is the best worldview. The point of view of others suck.They need to try to understand ours.
