When Tony Blair announced his resignation after 10 years as prime minister of the United Kingdom, his voice choked with emotion and he nearly shed a tear. He asked his audience to believe that he had always done what he thought was right. He would have been nearer the mark had he said that he always thought that what was right was whatever he had done. Throughout his years in office, he kept inviolable his belief in the existence of a purely beneficent essence of himself, a belief so strong that no quantity of untruthfulness, shady dealings, unscrupulousness, or constitutional impropriety could undermine or destroy it. Having come into the world marked by Original Virtue, Mr. Blair was also a natural-born preacher.

Anthony (A.M.) Daniels (1949-) is an English writer and retired physician (prison doctor and psychiatrist), who generally uses the pen name Theodore Dalrymple.
In his commentary, Daniels frequently argues that the so-called “progressive” views prevalent within Western intellectual circles minimize the responsibility of individuals for their own actions and undermine traditional values, contributing to the formation within rich countries of an underclass afflicted by endemic violence, criminality, sexual promiscuity, welfare dependency, and drug abuse.
Pretty amazing view on Only Blair. Was I not paying attention during his administration, or did the press give him a pass during his ten years?
He stood firmly with us during the war, when most offered only criticism.
... (bearing in mind that it is always highly speculative to make a diagnosis at a distance). But finally, a possible solution arrived in a flash of illumination. Mr. Blair suffered from a condition previously unknown to me: delusions of honesty.
As always, brilliant analysis from "Mr. Dalrymple." He's nailed not only Tony Blair, but an entire generation of politicians and bureaucrats like him.
I'm reminded of the famous exchange from "Patton": "General, sometimes they can't tell when you're acting." "It isn't important for them to know - it's only important for me to know!"
Tony Blair is/was a liberal.
I don’t know why so many people forget that.
In the UK, I think, Liberal and Labor are virtually the same thing. They have no qualms about the lack of any designation in their politics. In the US, at least for now, there is a sort of a thin line separating Labor and Democrats... rapidly fading of course, but still two distinct political and social phenomena. In the end, we may end up with the same thing. God help us then.
Because of his alliance with the US and specifically GWB.
Crikey! I certainly don’t want T. Dalrymple pissed at me.
Unfortunately the population of the UK suffers from undiluted "collectivism" 24/7 from the BBC, ITV etc etc. Even Sky News, owned by Murdock, is left of center. Added to which the government schools preach socialism from the age of 4.
Unfortunately the Tories, who in fact are a bunch of lapdogs, are vilified in the electronic media. This is what happens when you don't have a written constitution.
