More U.S. Cities Give Local Police Immigration Authority, Despite Protests

July 17, 2007 12:14 p.m. EST

Jessica Pupovac - AHN Chicago, IL (AHN) - Local authorities, frustrated with Congressional failure to enact immigration reform, are increasingly enlisting local police to enforce existing federal laws.

The City Council in Waukegan, Illinois voted Tuesday to close debate and apply for a federal program that will allow local police to initiate deportation proceedings for immigrants convicted of crimes. Last week, Prince William County in Virginia did the same.

They join dozens of municipalities across the country moving to give local police more authority, as the immigration debate moves off of capitol hill and into local meeting halls.

Many immigrant rights activists, however, charge that the initiatives enforce broken policies and that local authorities don't have the human or financial resources to put into action.

"We will review the [Prince William County] Resolution carefully to consider all appropriate legal options and will continue to monitor the implementation of this Resolution," stated Elise Shore of the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund. "Anti-immigrant measures such as this only serve to create divisiveness in our communities nationwide."

The measure is commonly called 287(g), after the section of the federal Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act it invokes.

Twenty-one state and local law-enforcement agencies, including those in Illinois, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Arizona, have already enacted the measure. Approximately 75 others hope to do so within the next year.

As I recall, Prince William County is in the heard of NOVA land (Northern Virginia). When urban suburbs start enacting these kinds of laws, perhaps the ball has begun moving...

This organization and the ACLU will not be able to afford taking municipalities to court if enough of them take the same approach.

Yes, precisely, this is the prairie fire we are trying to ignite nationwide.

It will result in a total rout of their position. Massive onslaught by sheet numbers.

The only logo I could find! (But probably appropriate, because so much $$$ is earned underground, escaping taxing authorities, and being Western Union-ized right out of the country into Mexico and Latin America:

The one just passed in Virginia last night US time, in Loudoun County, is to deny individuals illegally in our country any access to County Services in Loudoun County, and to also penalize those who hire such individuals in the county.

Little did I know, but on the same day, their sheriff in Loudoun County also officially approved the County going ahead and participating in the ICE 287(g) program to round up illegal aliens on the local level and ship them off to the Feds for deportation. Wow!!
