Psychologist Jonathan Haidt wants to help liberal types like me understand why some people condemn homosexual relationships as immoral...

...But why do so many people think homosexuality is disgusting? I never had any problem with it.

University of Pennsylvania psychologist and disgust expert Paul Rozin says it's particularly a guy thing - most heterosexual men are disgusted by the thought of touching other men. Rozin recalls experiments in which researchers asked subjects how disgusted they'd be if a Q-tip that had been in the mouth of either a man or a woman was subsequently touched to their own various orifices.

Women didn't care much whether the swab had touched the mouth of a man or a woman. But it mattered to men, who - surprise! - were not at all disgusted by the Q-tip that touched a woman but totally grossed out if they thought it had touched another guy's tongue.

Isn't it kind of babyish to declare gays immoral because you think their sex lives are icky?

... Haidt says he was inspired by the University of Chicago's Leon Kass, who headed President Bush's Council on Bioethics from 2002 to 2005. In an earlier essay, called "The Wisdom of Repugnance," Kass wrote that feelings of disgust come from "an emotional expression of a deep wisdom. . . . Shallow are the souls that have forgotten how to shudder."

That’s a very good point. Consider the militancy of the anti-smoking campaign. Taxes and laws have been enacted against smokers, all in the name of preventing disease. But for some reason, the health risks of homosexual activity, (which are numerous and often deadly) are ignored or dismissed.

But in any debate on this topic, the pro-homosexuals will always point out that hetero’s also participate in this behavior.

Regardless, a public awareness campaign against this behavior might go a long way in protecting health across the board.

Think about the whole trans-fatty acid movement - which do you think is more risky: a order of fries or (...modesty prevents description... but you know what I mean)?

Perhaps the next move of the GLBT community is to declare both bestiality and necrophilia acceptable sexual practices because they are also only opposed because of them being “icky.” Any argument one makes to declare homosexuality acceptable could also apply to bestiality and necrophilia would it not?

Oh, well, since YOU'RE the arbiter of western morality, that certainly carries some weight.

Isn't it kind of babyish to declare gays moral just because their actions don't bother YOU? Maybe "icky" is a purposely derogatory term for "offensive," or "laden with sinister implications for the public weal." Maybe we find homosexual behavior objectionable because eons of human development rejected it as antithetical to the perpetuation of the species.

Why does stepping in dog crap make you cringe? Why does the sound of someone vomiting make you want to retch? Certain responses are biological in origin, and have served as defensive mechanisms for ages.

But why do so many people think homosexuality is disgusting?

Three reasons;

1.)"So many people" already know what every five year old knows; that playing with your own or other people's poop is dangerous and potentially life-threatening.

2.)Spending every waking moment of one's life in perpetual search of an man's anus to cram one's penis into to dominate the other man or to demonstrate self-loathing, is "disgusting" to "so many people".

3.)Its a political movement that "so many people" want no part of because of its ties to the LEFT.

The idea is to get you to doubt your own validity, and accept anything, and all.

This cannot be repeated enough. Fortunately, once you have become aware of this tactic, it doesn't work anymore.

I would say this person does not comprehend that the Catholic Church just agreed to pay $660,000,000 to children sodomized and their lives ruined by harmless homosexuals.

Oh I am sorry, she is part of the media that has chosen to ignore that fact because it is against some rule to call these sick perverts what they really are, sexual predators. They won’t do that because they would have to stop calling the Boy Scouts bigots.

No, all you are doing is making rational people question whether interracial marriage was ever right. Which, understandably, is why black civil rights activists want nothing to do with the gay agenda of mainstreaming homosexuals.

Uhh, the problem is, with male homosexuals, the q tip doesn’t go in their mouths.

It is innate in most creatures to be repelled by feces. Creatures that wallow in fecal filth are generally distasteful to a population.

The author doesn’t make sense. If homophobia means that I find the gay lifestyle to be disgusting and unhealthy, then YES I’m homophobic, and proud of it! Even little kids have the common sense to see that Bruce marrying Lenny is sick. The liberals want us to completely erase our commmon sense.

Do you know what fuels homophobia is the constant bombardment by the media and special interest groups pounding it in our heads and in our faces every minute of the day that this life style is as normal as any marriage between a man and a women. People are disgusted with this sell.

It has nothing to do with disgust. It has to do with pity.

They’re killing themselves at a very young age via some form of self-administered bio warfare. And, of course, who wants to expose themselves to those bio agents.
