Sex and the Married Senator

Jay Leno and David Letterman never run out of material when they are making fun of politicians, especially when it involves sex and hypocrisy. After years of beating up on Bill Clinton for his sexual indiscretions, the late-night comedians are spending equal time chortling about Republicans who have been caught with their pants down.

Their latest target is Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican. Vitter is an easy target for those looking to play "pin the hypocrite tail on the elephant." He's a lector in his local Catholic Church and he has been associated with the Family Research Council, the political offshoot of Dr. James Dobson's Focus on the Family. Pictures of a woman said to be the prostitute with whom Vitter reportedly had a relationship are posted on various Websites.

An organization should be judged not by how many sinners are found among them but what that organization does when it discovers the sinner.

When a Republican like Newt Gingrich is found out to be cheating, he gets tossed out. On the other hand an unfaithful Democrat becomes a party icon.

This case is fascinating.

It shows that the far deeper hypocrisy is that of the liberals. Just about “to a man,” they even testify that they aren’t really offended by the immorality of a man (a married man at that) visiting a prostitute.

No, what “really” offends their sense of "morality" is that a man stands up for God’s actual morality, though he, a mere man fails to thoroughly live up to it.

Thus, by what are they offended the most? To we sinners standing up for the ideal of morality, itself!

How can one get more hypocritical than to attack those who declare actual morality, being “outraged” that their sensibilities are violated thereby — while the actual violation of morality doesn’t really mean anything to them?

Now THAT’S REAL PERVERSITY.

It reminds me of the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah. What offended them was that Lot wouldn’t let them have their way with the angels that visited him.

I’ll never understand why any “male” with a family, especially an elected official serving in Congress, would go and visit a prostitute.

Vitter isn’t a man, he’s a dog.

Regardless of party affiliation or perceived double standard, he is unfit to serve and should resign.

At least we can say that Vitter's not blind.

He would have to be either mentally ill or mentally retarded to carry on that way, knowing full well the environment he is in. Either way, if he makes judgments like that, he isn’t fit for office.

Newt Gingrich was run out over losses in the 1998 election -- his infidelity didn't come to light, though it was allegedly well-known on the Hill, until after he'd left office. Henry Hyde retired 8 years after his affair was made public. Don't hurt yourself lunging to pat the GOP on the back.

An organization should be judged not by how many sinners are found among them but what that organization does when it discovers the sinner.

And since every single human being on the face of the earth is a sinner and their righteousness is as filthy rags, there can be no one left in the organization (Republican party) you speak of.

Boy that King David, killer of tens of thousands, adulterer, husband of many wives. Isaiah, prophet of God, prophesier of the coming of Jesus (Isaiah 52 last 3 verses and Isaiah 53 full chapter), had sex with prostitute and had a child with her.

man if only Jesus had kicked the apostles and Mary Magdeline out of his organization how wonderful it would have been.

I concur. How can a person who cannot be trusted to uphold their wedding vows be trusted to uphold their oath for public office.

Bathsheba was not a prostitute. She was married to one of David's soldiers.

And my opinion on this sorry episode is beginning to change. At first so long as I trusted Senator Vitter's appeals of forgiveness I was willing to let it go. But the fact is he broke the law by having sex with a prostitute. This is a giant hypocrisy, and involves far more than just his wife and children.

And since every single human being on the face of the earth is a sinner and their righteousness is as filthy rags, there can be no one left in the organization (Republican party) you speak of.

All human beings are sinful, but every institution has the right to enforce some moral standards, otherwise there would be complete chaos. There is a line to be drawn to be sure. But surely breaking the law of the land fits well within the boundary what Congress should ask of its members.

Well, that eliminates 90% of the field of candidates on both sides.

What is your point? Are you saying we shouldn’t judge an organization by what it does when it discovers that one of their own has gone bad? Shouldn’t we judge the Catholic Church by how they deal with pedophile priests? The priests keep their jobs and the church pays half a billion to their victims.

When you have crooked people in your organization you have to do something. If you don’t you will soon be part of a corrupt organization.
