CBS encamped 40 kids in an abandoned New Mexico ghost town for more than a month. The kids performed on camera for more than 14 hours at a stretch, seven days a week, making their own meals.
They were filming during the school year, yet no studio teachers were present. They were working on a major television production, yet no parents were on the set.
The show is CBS upcoming reality series "Kid Nation." When rivals first got wind of the concept, they declared the production an impossible endeavor: From a legal, labor, public relations and logistical standpoint, this show should never have worked.

Howd they do it? By literally declaring the production a "summer camp" instead of a place of employment; by taking advantage of a loophole in New Mexico labor rules two months before the state legislature tightened the law, and using a ghost town that wasnt exactly a ghost town.

On July 1, New Mexico passed legislation closing a federal loophole that had exempted television and theatrical productions from child labor law restrictions.
“Lord of the Flies” - “The Sequel”.
Lucky they all weren’t butchered down there...
I see CBS is about to evacuate their PC bowels again...
NM FReeper Ping. If you want on or off the NM ping list, FReepmail me.
You beat me to it.
I’m interested to see how this show turned out.
Well, NEW Mexico is not quite as savage as OLD Mexico...I don't think physical violence was a danger, but with that age range, I bet there was some bullying going on.
The conch is gone! I am chief!
Or if the started acting immensely irresponsibly or cried on camera it would be C-Span IV.
I think bullying happens at any age, that is just part of human nature.
LOL... my bad... although, NM has some strange people in it.
“My gripe is with the parents of children 8-15 that would allow their kids to be exploited like this”
What did you expect here in the United States of American Idol, where getting on TV (even for a few seconds) is the top priority for many?
I suspect this is actually an anti-parent, anti-family show. Put a bunch of kids in an artificial environment, show their successes, show parents & families to be overrated and perhaps harmful to a child’s development.
ROTFL..."NM has some strange people in it"...as compared to John Kerry and the Kennedy clan??? ;)
See post #4. The Dentist nailed it.
I can't wait!...and this will be aimed at the youth audience. Fix your forefather's MISTAKES?
What a load of crap!
The TV and entertainment companies are little better than pushers, hooking kids on destructive anti-social junk they take in with their eyes and ears instead of veins and noses.
There was a comedy show called "The Jamie Kennedy X Experiment" similar to Candid Camera in some ways. One episode had JK dressed up as a network exec pitching some parents on "Child Survivor", including some proposed clips along the theme of Lord of the Flies. Some parents were aghast and said no, some were not.
