Check in when you can.

We’ll worry and pray in the meanwhile.

It hit around 1013 local time. I am on the 28th floor of a building in central Tokyo. It swayed back and forth for a good 5 minutes. I felt like I was on a ship at sea.

It’s centered off Niigata Prefecture, that’s on the east coast of the country (Sea of Japan) side.

We have the tv on in the office. No reports of damage or casualties yet. The news said it was six on the Japanese scale of seven (6.6 on the richter scale)

From BBC:

‘Strong’ earthquake felt in Tokyo

An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 has hit Japan’s capital, Tokyo, with residents saying they felt buildings shake.
A tsunami warning has been issued in Niigata in northwestern Japan, public broadcaster NHK reported, and waves up 50cm (20 inches) high hit the coast.

So far there have been no reports of any injuries or serious damage.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, which is situated in one of the world’s most seismically active areas, and the country regularly holds safety drills.

In October 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Niigata, killing 65 people, and in 1995 a magnitude 7.2 tremor killed more than 6,400 in Kobe.

The Japanese have pretty good building codes, but my understanding is that they are built to withstand one type of quake, the Kobe quake caused so much damage because it was the other kind. Hopefully this quake is the kind they build to withstand.

Stay safe. Ironically, in the event of a tsunami, it’s better the people all go to work in their high-rises, yes?
