PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush spent the weekend at the White House, where they attended a T-ball game today. The President will meet with Polish President Lech Kaczynski tomorrow to discuss plans for a U.S. missile shield in Eastern Europe.
Bush and Polish president to focus on missile shield
Reuters WARSAW: President George W. Bush meets President Lech Kaczynski of Poland on Monday to iron out details of plans for a U.S. missile shield in Eastern Europe that is straining relations with Moscow. Underlining the growing tension between Russia and the West, President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed a decree suspending Moscow's participation in the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty.
But Washington is determined to go ahead with building the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic despite Putin's objections and proposal to use a radar in Azerbaijan instead.
The talks with Kaczynski, one of Moscow's most outspoken critics and a key U.S. ally in Europe, should bring the plan closer to life.
"We won't be announcing a final agreement in Washington because President Kaczynski will want to do this at home," said a senior Polish official who declined to be named. "But we should be much closer to a deal after the meeting."
Washington wants to place interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar facility in the Czech Republic to protect the United States and its allies from missile attacks from what it calls "rogue states" such as Iran and North Korea.
Bush last month visited both Poland and the Czech Republic, which has already agreed to accept the radar site on its territory.
So far Poland has held out, hoping to negotiate related military contracts or other concessions. Other unresolved issues include related legal matters, such as the status of U.S. soldiers on Polish soil.
Polish and U.S. negotiators held a round of talks in late June in Washington and will hold further talks this month or in early August. Deputy Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, who represents Poland in the talks, expects a deal in September or October.
Polish officials said Bush and Kaczynski would also discuss Poland's participation in the military missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This month, Defense Minister Aleksander Szczyglo said he would not rule out keeping Poland's 900 soldiers in Iraq beyond the end of this year. Poland also has 1,200 troops deployed in Afghanistan as part of a NATO mission.
Next to Great Britain, the Poles are our staunchest European allies.

For those who may be interested, the little black Chihuahua I helped rescue last Sunday spent two days in "jail" (the pound), but only because Monday and Tuesday are their weekend. The owner picked the dog up on Wednesday. Another life saved. :)

The game is on between the Inner City Little League of Brooklyn, N.Y. and the Wrigley Little League Dodgers of Los Angeles, all wearing the number 42 in honor of Hall of Fame player Jackie Robinson, at the White House T-Ball Game on the South Lawn today. Brooklyn and Los Angeles represent the two home cities of Robinson's team. (The little kid who's hitting in this pic has a terrific swing.)

Players from the Inner City Little League of Brooklyn, N.Y. give a group hug to Dugout, the Little League mascot.

Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda urges on a player from the Wrigley Little League Dodgers of Los Angeles as the kid runs for home.

Good on you for saving the little guy.Little thing was racing in a blind panic down the side street toward a major street. Would have gotten killed for sure there, but I was able to use my car to turn her into a yard with an open gate. Then the guy who had been chasing her on foot closed the gate, and between us we were able to corral and calm the poor dog.
I didn't want the dog to go to the pound, but the way things worked out, someone had called. But all's well that ends well.
I made a trip to the pound on Wednesday to verify that the dog had been picked up by her owner.
