There was a time when the Army was considered an excellent destination for problem youths. I have no problem with returning to that.
An Inner City Black guy I worked with used to bemoan the loss of the Draft. He blamed much of the problems on "Bored, undisciplined @ssholes who ruin everything for everybody".
I think half my platoon at Parris Island in 1970 was there to escape prison.
I'm sure you don't, assuming you won't have to deal with them. There's a private in my old unit is sitting in Leavenworth right now for a double homicide from a failed robbery attempt. The Army let him in, well aware of his gang ties and criminal record. You can imagine the fun the local media had with that.
Criminals have no place in todays military. Better to go undermanned than with the wrong people in the foxhole with you.
It was commonplace in the 50s and 60s. Jail or the Army. You pick.
When I was in the army (69 - 72) two guys I was stationed with were forced by their respective judges to either volunteer for the draft or go to jail (for whatever crimes they were convicted of). Nothing major thats for sure but 18 and 19 year old kids are prone to doing real stupid things.......
