Our nation has never attempted something as bold as installing democracy in this troubled part of the world and attempting to make a country like Iraq stable enough so that they can handle their own terrorists without our intervention.
I could've sworn there was something said about not getting into any nation building and look at what's happening. And tying us up with the UN in the use of force resolution in Iraq almost completely guaranteed a loss instead of a win.

The Second Presidential Debate

MODERATOR: Sure, absolutely, sure. Somalia.

BUSH: Started off as a humanitarian mission and it changed into a nation-building mission, and that's where the mission went wrong. The mission was changed. And as a result, our nation paid a price. And so I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building. I think our troops ought to be used to fight and win war. I think our troops ought to be used to help overthrow the dictator when it's in our best interests. But in this case it was a nation-building exercise, and same with Haiti. I wouldn't have supported either.

HA...I guess you wouldn’t have supported WWII...let’s see Japan and Germany both had to be re built...now I’d also call that nation building...after a war which we won...to get a people back on their feet there’s nation building...otherwise we’d be back fightin’ again. Same with Japan and Germany...as a matter of fact...if Germany would have been taken care of properly after WWI...we’d not had WWII...
