In most high school History texts today, Lee is a nonperson. Because he fought for the side which upheld slavery he can’t be mentioned, or only mentioned in passing.
His military brillance, his character, his love of his country, Virginia are all unmentionables. Ask a teenager about Lee today, most of never heard of him.
And that’s the way it is.
“Ask a teenager about Lee today, most of never heard of him.”
But he’ll know how hip AlGore is. Makes me want to hurl!
Also unmentionable nowadays was the fact he was very religious and humble. I've read Lee's previously published diaries and letters to his wife -- there can be no doubt of his character.
‘His military brillance, his character, his love of his country, Virginia are all unmentionables. Ask a teenager about Lee today, most of never heard of him.
And thats the way it is.’
Teenager responding to the question of who Robert E Lee was;
‘Oh I know! That the guy that built the car for the Dukes of Hazard!’
(chuckle)
and they get a whitewashed but overwhelming indoctrination into civil rights figures..
There's plenty of people here at FR who'll accuse you of being racist if you you mention any positive attributes of Lee as well. I'm just surprised to scroll down this far without someone flaming Lee & anyone who said any good thing about Lee.
Who do they remember from history? I doubt they've heard of Grant or Sherman either, if they've never heard of Lee.
Yet his decision to surrender his army, along with Grant’s willingness to give generous terms, probably saved the country from ten more years of strife. He set the course followed by the Confederate generals. Johnston, Moseby the guerilla leader, Dick Taylor and even Bedford Forrest.
