South Dakota awaits first execution in 60 years

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A 25-year-old man awaited a lethal injection Wednesday for the torture and slaying of a teenager who was forced to drink hydrochloric acid during a robbery of his home. It was to be the state's first execution in 60 years. Elijah Page, 25, gave up his appeals and asked to die for the 2000 murder of Chester Allan Poage, who was also stabbed, kicked and bashed with large rocks in a torture session that lasted two to three hours.

Page was scheduled to be put to death at 10 p.m.

I searched to see if this was previously posted using expected keywords.

This story was touched on in another capital punishment story.

The convicted pleaded guilty and did not appeal to delay an execution. "He wants to die" I believe are the words used in another story; and he is apparently guilty of a depraved act, calling for the ultimate penalty.

I believe the execution was delayed once before, mainly because they weren't sure if the execution could readily be carried out.

South Dakota's first in 60 years.

On the plus side he won’t spend millions of tax payer dollars going back and forth with the court, NAACP, et al fighting it and trying to get the death penalty overturned as cruel and unusual punishment.

I respect a man who takes responsibility for his actions, regardless of how brutal and inhuman.

I have a couple of other states I want the death penalty reinstated in.

The story says SD has only 3 other people on death row.

Some of these states really aren't jungles like other places and any murder is too much for me, understand; but they probably don't have a problem that is close to out of control like other states or metropolitan areas. Such more tranquil states though are surely few and far between.

The little time I have spent in SD, 3 days in Mitchell seemed to reveal an extremely quiet plains state.

Leftists will now burn white candles in memorial - something they never did for the victim.

Well, according to the story, they’re executing him right this minute.

Welcome back to the club, S.D.

No one jump on me for the syntax; I believe the Strib has updated this story as it is going on.

I simply cut and paste the headline, now it has changed to “S.D. killer elects to let execution go forward” updated just 10 minutes ago. I know it is against the rules to make one’s own headline.

Now, even a different journalist authors the article; but it is kind of good in being a live presentation.

Hell; you'd almost think, it was the first murder since... this guy was shot with the deadman's hand.

And the guy who was executed tonight (I assume); from the story was from Athens Texas.

South Dakota probably had more of a reason for the Death Penalty back in the days of Wild Bill.

Carried out: and (excerpt)

“For his last meal, Page requested steak, jalapeno poppers, onion rings, a salad, lemon iced tea, coffee and ice cream.”

I would pray for the victim and all, from the story, the victim’s last name was Poage; the executed, Page. Some story to think about, resting one’s head on the pillow, before going to sleep.

But the murderer is white! I thought only blacks were executed! Jesse and Al said so, and they wouldn’t lie!!

OK, I’ve read the intro 3 times. I also went and read the article it refers to.

So my question is this: Is the condemned man the robber or the victim of a robbery?

I guess it’s too much to ask that people who write for a living actually know how to do it.
