Camp getaway for military daughters

Next month, about 80 young girls from southern Arizona will head off to an extended Girl Scout camp for free.

"Operation Red Shirt" gives young girls with a parent deployed overseas the chance to attend Girl Scout camp whether they're a scout or not.

Seven year old Emma Guerry is very excited about her first day of summer camp.

"It's on Mountain Lemmon," said Emma with a laugh.

The Mount Lemmon camp is an all girl's camp for military daughters with at least one parent serving overseas in the war.

"Kids coming back to school in the fall don't always have their entire family unit together. Some are deployed fighting the war," said Kristen Culliney with the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council.

Both Emma's mother and father are fighting the war in the Middle East.

She and her one year old sister are cared for by Emma's stepmother, Shawna Guerry.

"Anytime the phone rings, she's saying daddy," said Guerry.

And while our News 4 crew was there, the phone rang.

Air Force Tech Sgt. Brad Guerry, Emma's father called his daughter.

"I miss you too, daddy," said Emma as she got off the phone.

Shawna says Emma used to have nightmares knowing that her father would be gone, "She did have a few nightmares. You know, waking up thinking something had happened to her dad," she said.

What does Emma think of her parents fighting the war overseas? "I don't think it's cool because they might get killed," she said.

Organizers are hoping the week long camp will take Emma's and about seventy-five other girls' minds away from such heavy thoughts.

"To maybe get their off the fact that their parents are serving in the war," said Culliney.

"Operation Red Shirt" was made possible by two local donors who gave $16,000 for the girls' camp.

The same couple also gave an additional $16,000 so the Boy Scouts could hold a similar camp as well.

Not that there would be any Family Life Exploration going on....

My point being that the mention of the gift to boys was relegated to a single “oh, by the way” status!
