Part of her Beautify America program was to cut down and control the number of billboards on interstates and highways.
Billboards on the highway would be hard to drive over. I am talking about private property that may be located next to the highway.

Woodrow Wilson’s wife virtually ran the country for a while didn’t she? When Wilson had a stroke in office?

You know, tough Texas gals are a unique breed. Even though I disagreed with ol' Ma Richards, she was a real dame. Sassy, loud, and right up front with you. Mrs. Johnson was a lady in every sense of the word--genteel and demure, but tough as nails.
I remember a story about how Lyndon would call her from the Capitol, when he was in the House, and tell her to have supper ready for a whole gang of guys in a matter of minutes. She never complained.
Every Sunday night, Lyndon had Sam Rayburn over to their apartment. She made him chili and they would listen to Walter Winchell on the radio. Speaker Sam loved both of them.
The old Southern Democratic party, even though it was affected by the New Deal, was more grounded in conservative ideals than their northern counterparts. Limited government, federalism, strong national defense.
Her passing really underscores the change in our country over the last 60 years.

A line by Madeline Kahn from the movie, “Sleuth”, I think it was, comes to mind. She played a widow in the movie and told someone it was a matter of life after death, “Now that he’s dead, I have a life.”

My momma used to always see her at lectures and events around Austin. In recent years, she became very frail due to a series of stroke. She has been in a wheelchair for a while and has been unable to talk.
Nice that she could go home. Sad to think that it makes me feel a bit older.

We took a trip to San Antonio a few years ago, the flowers along the highway were all in bloom, beautiful! It looked like a Monet painting.

A Classy Lady, Texas will remember her every Spring,
I think it's safe to say that if it weren't for her, most Texans would never see bluebonnets outside of a flower store..

I certainly hope Laura Bush doesn’t read that.

I'm torn between her good works and the fact that she could MAYBE have had some kind of good influence on him and didn't!
I've heard several times over the years that she convinced him not to run again. Whether that qualifies as good influence or not is hard to say, depending on your view of the Vietnam War.

Prayers for her eternal rest, and for the comfort and consolation of her friends and family.

the flowers along the highway were all in bloom And shrubs. There are shrubs in front of my house that wouldn't be there but for her mention of shrubs, etc. They're not much, but they cause me to think of her now and then.
