She had a dignity and class about her that her husband never had.

Four Presidents lived to be 90: Adams, Hoover, Ford and Reagan.

I guess Betty Ford will reach that age soon, and don't know if the difference is statistically significant, but it could be that life may be harder on politician's wives than on the politicians themselves.

But it does happen that wives --second wives -- like Theodore Roosevelt's and Woodrow Wilson's have long survived their husbands.

For that matter, Bess and Lady Bird long outlived their husbands and lived longer than any president.

"Ugliness is so grim," Lady Bird Johnson once said. "A little beauty, something that is lovely, I think, can help create harmony which will lessen tensions."

Trite, maybe, but true. She was alright. In a better world, she'd have been President, not the other LBJ.

Lyndon treated that poor woman like dirt, but she loved her man and was loyal to him and his memory.

In high school ( a million years ago), I was an intern at KTBC-TV in Austin. I remember seeing Mrs. Johnson around the offices from time to time.

She was part of a generation of tough, classy, Texas womanhood that has almost completely vanished. Sorta sad.

The record holder for outliving a presidential husband is probably Frances Cleveland. She married the 49 year old president when she was 22. She outlived him by 39 years.

In March, she listened from Texas through a conference call when President Bush signed legislation naming the Education Department headquarters building in Washington, D.C., after her late husband.

Yet another reason to dismantle the department of education.

She outlived Johnson by 3+ decades (he died in the early 70s of heart attack?_) and so atleast she had peace in her final years. She was a gracious first lady - really the only lousy one we’ve had in the last 50 years has been Hillary - even Rosalyn wasn’t an “in your face” first lady.
