It is said that the men were on three military trucks headin' back to their base under heavy rainfalls. Their trucks got stuck in the muddy, unpaved roads. Unknowingly for the men, the muzzies are treacherously setting up ambush positions around them and started the firefight. Around 80 Marines against 300 to 400 muzzies... purely infantry to infantry firefight...
By the way... the muzzies claimed that it's the Marines' fault.

It is poor strategic thinking to abuse prisoners, because it gives soldiers a strong incentive to fight to the death, rather than surrender. I dare say there are a lot of Marines in the Philippines who will choose to die and take as many Abu Sayef fighters with them in the next fight where they find themselves in a strategically untenable position.
