For six months now, Nebraskans have been able to legally carry concealed weapons. It's a lengthy process to get a permit. But now that it's an option, how many people actually want a gun at their side?
Gene Tyson of Norfolk not only fought to get the Concealed-Carry law passed during his eight years in the Nebraska Legislature, he's now one of the many with a permit to carry a concealed gun.
Gene Tyson, Norfolk, NE says, "It's my belief that people are going to have to be ultimately responsible for their own safety."
Although Tyson says the odds you'll need to use that gun are slim, the law gives permit holders the option. Joining more than 40 other states with similar laws in place. But with any weapon comes great responsibility.
Gene Tyson, Norfolk, NE says, "You got to be very careful when you have one because its a responsibility and it's a responsibility that can cause problems if you don't meet it in the right way "
Since the first of the year when the law took effect, more than 16-thousand concealed-carry permits have been issued to Nebraskans, 95 of them in Norfolk. Another 200 or so statewide under consideration. So far only five have been turned down. A Nebraska State Patrol spokesperson says that's because the paperwork wasn't complete or they didn't meet guidelines.
Knowing that there are a little less than 2-thousand people in the state of Nebraska that can legally carry a concealed weapon does that create new concerns for law enforcement on a traffic stop or at the scene of a crime?
Lt. Randy Morehead, Nebraska State patrol says, "I think at any point in time, all police officers need to express a level of caution when responding to any given situation."
Nebraska State Patrol Lieutenant Randy Morehead says all concealed-carry permit holders undergo background checks, fingerprint and hand print identification, and need to complete a Certified gun training course that's approved by the state. And if a permit holder is pulled over by law enforcement they're immediately required to tell that officer they have a weapon.
Lt. Randy Morehead, Nebraska State patrol says, "If you're a permit holder again, at any point in time, you need to identify yourself as a concealed weapons carrier and be prepared to display your card."
While he doesn't teach courses for the Nebraska State Patrol, Gene Tyson is an N-R-A certified gun instructor with years of firearm experience. His nine millimeter semi-automatic pistol is usually kept in a safe place, not carried as a side arm. In fact he says he has yet to carry it as a concealed weapon. But he's one of the almost 2-thousand Nebraskans who are glad they have the option.
Some other things to keep in mind, there are places you can't carry a gun even if you have a concealed-carry permit.
Many Nebraska businesses now post signs and they're not allowed in some government buildings, schools, or places of worship.
Many cities even have their own ordinances banning concealed weapons: Norfolk, Wayne, South Sioux City and Omaha to name a few.
And your Nebraska permit doesn't necessarily mean you can carry a concealed gun in other states. There are only 13 states that honor Nebraska's Concealed Carry permit.

Congrats Cornhuskers.
An armed society is a polite society
I carry Walther every day. Cargo pants are a God send for CCW.A 4” barrel fits in the front pocket without notice.
Correction. I carry my Walther every day.
Checkout 5-11 Tactical shirts/pants, etc..... I wear the shirts which have 2 front pockets with velcro's inner pockets behind the outer ones. You can pack a pretty large piece in them.
Nebraskans I’ve met are some of the most red-blooded, hardworking, freedom loving people I’ve ever met, can’t believe that they have just now finally passed CCW into law, better late than never I guess.
bump
Yes, thankfully, it does.
You set a fine example. The best gun is the one you have with you when the sierra hits the fan.
“I carry Walther every day. Cargo pants are a God send for CCW.A 4 barrel fits in the front pocket without notice.”
Didn’t Mae West say something like “Is that a Walther in your pocket or are ya just happy to see me?”
Yes, hopefully both the cops and the CC person will feel that they are on the same side of the law and the cops can look at it as backup against the bad guys.
I don’t have conealed carry but I do carry in a legal manner when I do carry. I am also EMT trained and whole a bunch of other things.
The only time I won’t put myself in harms way to help out in a situation is if I have my grand kids or someone else in my responsibility of protection.
Now, can someone please forward this thread to that laughingstock, do as I say-not as I do, dork of a governor, Jon Corzine? I’ll probably be eighty years old before there is ever CCW in New Jersey. We had our chance with Schundler, may he run again....
I carried a blued semi-auto for several years, I got tired of oiling it once a week in the summer to get the rust spots off. I ended up with a stainless snub nose .357 magnum in a trade, it’s more compact, and it doesn’t rust.
These folks have been watching “Jericho” ...
Yeah Nebraska!!!
