I wonder though whether they practice discrimination against others as fully as others discriminate against them. A minimal level of assimilation is protective.

I believe they congregate together precisely to avoid being discriminated against, not with the intention of discriminating against others. I don't know how they'd treat Gentiles who might enter a deli or another shop in their neighborhood. I'd guess they'd be hospitable, as long as the person isn't trying to make trouble.

They have their shops to support their own community's customs, dietary and otherwise. For example, Hasidic Jewish women wear wigs in public, because only their husbands are allowed to see their hair. So I would assume that a wig shop would be a thriving business in that community, as would a shop that sells the long frock coats and dark hats that the men wear.
