(Ted) Stevens fears impact of current probe

Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and once the chief power broker for dispensing federal dollars, says he's worried that a corruption investigation "could cause me some trouble" in running for re-election next year.

The 83-year-old Alaska Republican has drawn Justice Department scrutiny over a renovation project in 2000 that more than doubled the size of his home in a resort town surrounded by glaciers.

The remodeling was overseen by Bill Allen, a contractor who has pleaded guilty to bribing Alaska state legislators. Allen is founder of VECO Corp., an Alaska-based oil field services and engineering company that has reaped tens of millions of dollars in federal contracts.

Allen is cooperating with the FBI, and investigators appear to be looking at whether VECO got anything in return for the home improvement help.

Sen. Stevens, who has served since 1968, has been caught up in a larger probe that included FBI raids last summer at offices of six Alaska legislators — including Stevens' son, Ben, who was then the president of the state Senate.

Thanks for the links...of course, I had to google earth the place where the bridge is supposed to go, and I have to admit...it didn’t strike me that the bridge was honestly the bridge to nowhere...

The town (which admittedly is even smaller than the town I live in) is in what appears to be a pretty isolated area, but the island they want to connect to is by no means a tiny island as it says in the WP article...I measured it and it is a 22x9 mile island...with the only airport in the region on it. Perhaps they want to be able to drive over to the airport...or maybe in the future they are looking to connect to the nearby peninsula over the water using the island, but unless they are thinking of sinking about 15 Billion and developing new technology, that ain’t gonna happen.

Anyway...I have made up my mind...:)

While I do not favor a mandatory retirement age for politicians, I believe a mandatory euthanasia age should be strongly considered.

"Stevens is an example of all that’s wrong with the GOP."

Oh so true! Sure the media hypes allot of this stuff, and SURE the dems do the same types of things, but the GOP politicians need to realize how things are, and make the extra effort to stay squeaky clean and shouldn't even appear to be doing anything improper.

“He needs to be knocked out in the primary so that we don’t lose the seat.”

If necessary, but it’s still early, so he should be given some time to retire voluntarily.

Time for new blood in Alaska.

Alaska represents a problem with politics these days - the emergence of family oligarchies and dynasties. We have Ted Stevens and his kin like his son and Murkowski and his daughter getting into political positions of influence with lifetime privileges. Kennedys in Massachusetts have been at it for decades.

And we have had Bushes and Clintons running America for 20 years with the prospect of 8 more with Hillary. (Will Jeb Bush be far behind?)

Are there only two families to run Alaska? Arethere only two families to run America? It's time for new blood in America also.

Let's get the term limits movement going again.

Yeah, the number of political family dynasties is starting to seriously concern me. I live in PA where former Gov. Casey’s son just became Sen. Casey, so it hits close to home for me. It’s one of the reasons I’m concerned about Romney — I don’t think we need any more dynastic presidents.

Shaking my head. Its morons like Stevens are why RATS compete in Solid Red States. The corrupt moderate GOP establishment enabled a light weight like Tom Knowles to win as Governor.
