Last week, Dick and Silvia Glover went to the Wales West RV Park in Silver Hill, Ala., with their foster son Caleb. When the boy was banned from using the pool and showers, the Glovers said they were offered an uncomfortable and painful choice: They could either keep Caleb out of the water or leave.

I am sure their are some swimming pools in Alabama that do not use chlorine but I imagine this one does.

HIV is not spread through pool water or bathing facilities.
HIV is not TB or ecoli.. it doesn’t spread that way.

A recent report in the Philly area revealed how LITTLE good chlorine in pools actually does. It doesn’t kill nearly as many bacteria and viruses as we want to believe.
And if the child gets a bloody nose in the pool, this isn’t a threat to other children?
If there is ignorance surrounding this story, it is that neither you nor I nor the pool owner knows the exact degree of the threat. The pool owner erred on the side of caution, not only a smart decision business-wise and legally in this sue-crazy world, but also, I believe, the more ethical decision.

I have been a school teacher for 15+ years, I have been bled on, spit on, scratched and bitten by kids who may or may not have HIV. I can't ask and they won't tell me who is infected. The odds are that sooner or later I will be exposed, without my knowledge because of your half-assed amazement.

He's not going to lose anything. HIV status does not put one in a protected class. Discrimination in this case isn't illegal.
I agree with the park owner. HIV/AIDS is too serious to take a chance, no matter who the person is. I feel sorry for the family and the little boy.....but that’s the way it is.

The study you are trying to cite is about open sewage not pool water, huge difference.
Please cite one case where a person has contracted HIV from non sexual activity is a swimming pool.
My understanding is that chlorine kills AIDS/HIV virus outside the body, so a well chlorinated pool is a safer place then a public restroom.

The study showed that HIV infected blood was present in water 5 minutes after introduction (albeit a small amount). Nothing about sewage in that part.
Come on there are billions of pages of data on the Internet. Just find one page out of the billions that even suggests that people have contracted HIV via non sexual activity is a chlorinated swimming pool.
Ignorance is not yet a crime. If it ever becomes one, I will celebrate mostly the unintended consequences.
Until that happens, the issue is one of choice; if I am likely to interact with anyone with a communicable disease, I think an informed choice is my right. The patient's feeling good about himself can't trump that.
Fact:
HIV is pread by unprotected sex, oral sex, anal sex, heterosexual sex, blood exposure, transplacental contagion, childbirth transmission, and breastfeeding.
It is NOT spread by saliva or kissing, casual contact or touching, clothing, food, or utensils, from public toilets or swimming pools, nor by insect bites.
Did I say there was a case?
No, I didn’t.
That said, it is not necessary to cite a case.
Plenty of other diseases are spread in public pools.
The pool owner erred on the side of safety.
If you want to go swim in a pool infested with every disease under the sun, that’s your prerogative. I’m sure you’ll find a pool owner willing to accommodate.
But as far as the pool owner in this story, why not allow him the freedom to make a decision concerning his pool and the safety of his customers.
