I was thinking the same thing, why hire a guy who apparently can’t do the job? Not that having McCain as a candidiate would not be a huge handicap in the first place but still.

Fired McCain Aides May Be Hired by Thompson What a shock. /s
I've been saying since Thompson's trial balloon went up that McCain clearly knew then he was in deep, probably fatal, trouble...and that if Thompson's balloon flew, he'd be on his way out the door.
Fred Thompson = Bush redux, with a McCain twist.

It is when he is running for office of president does the real liberal comes out: 'his voting record during the 107th Congress, from January 2001 through November of 2002, places him as the 6th most liberal Republican senator,' Are you saying that McCain was running for president in 2001 and 2002?
How did that go?

“Fred wants to close the borders and opposes amnesty.”
So does President Bush. Do you still believe it?
What Fred has said is that he opposes BLANKET amnesty. He proposes determining who is here and says, Youre going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship.
And I have yet to hear any specifics on how he proposes to effectively secure the borders...at least none that differs from what Bush has proposed.

Bush supported the kennedy/mccain bill.
Thompson opposed it.
I would say his views are not what you’re making them out to be - try sticking to the facts and leave the FUD at home.

I loved Fred in that movie!

Basically there is nothing unusual about campaign workers moving to different campaigns as the one they originated with faulters..... After all it's a job and like lawyers they go where the work is. That said McCain may not totally be out of it yet but my personal guess is he will be.
From the article:
While Mr. McCain's outlook appears bleak now, history offers some hope. President Reagan struggled during his second bid for the presidency in 1980, and as recently as 2003, Senator Kerry trailed badly in fund-raising and in the polls before overtaking Howard Dean and John Edwards to win the Democratic nomination.

Not only did Thompson endorse McCains candidacy in 2000, but he co-chaired the McCain campaign! <<
Shhhhh!!!! Have you forgotten that it's ONLY treasonous when LINDSEY GRAHAM does that? If Fred does it, that's just fine and we need to promote the man to leader of the free world. (of course when Lindsey does it, the action becomes treasonous and proof that Graham is McCain's homosexual lover and Hillary has his FBI files)

How nice of Fred to now "oppose" amnesty when he's no longer in the Senate and doesn't have to actually vote on the bill, leaving him free to say whatever he wants. Mel Martinez also was "strongly opposed to amnesty" when he was campaigning for office and didn't have to worry about a paper trail from voting on the stuff.
