Break in Missing Madison, Wis. Student Case Leads to Police Search Outside of Madison

MADISON, Wis. — Madison police started a search at sunrise Monday in the village of Oregon for evidence related to a 22-year-old student who went missing more than two weeks ago after a night of drinking.

The search in the Kelly Nolan case was focused on a 3-square-mile area immediately north of the village of Oregon, east of Highway 14, Madison police said.

A number of geographical areas were identified during the investigation as being worth searching, police said.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said early Monday morning that he did not know yet whether anything had been found.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater senior was last seen early on the morning of June 23 after a night out with friends at downtown Madison bars. Her family has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to her return.

Police have said they have no reason to suspect foul play.

A Madison cafe owner said Saturday that an employee reported seeing Nolan early on June 23, the morning she was last seen. The employee walked Nolan toward her home until they ran into another man who said he knew Nolan, according to Tom Paras, the owner of Amy's Cafe.

They're hedging their bets. The likelihood that a body discovered in an 'area of interest' isn't the victim is pretty small; unless the perp is found/known to be someone who's killed previously, and this is a dumping ground.

April Nolan, 20, has acknowledged talking to her elder sister by phone on the day Kelly disappeared, but declined to discuss details of the call, saying it's irrelevant to the search.

I'm hoping that by these stories getting in the news that it might save some young lady who thinks she is invincible--like my two daughters. They are starting to think about the dangers of being alone and too trusting. They don't do the bar scene or anything like that, but it can just take a walk to the car in the parking lot.

Course, one of our girls works at a police academy and street fights cops to teach them how to fight. She says you would be surprised at the number of trainees that have never ever been in a fight.-------I tell her it's cause we're raising a bunch of pansies instead of men. When there were fights on the playground when I grew up--they duked it out. Made for tough guys.

I think a common parallel in many of these missing college-aged girls cases is this: the killer is almost always in his mid 30s, if not older. If girls in college hung out with (and sought out) guys in college, I don’t think we’d see as many of these cases.
