SPIRITUAL OR PHYSICAL?
A popular television commercial for an on-line stock trading company really captures one's attention. It begins with a motley group of executives in a meditation/relaxation class. The first participant is asked where he is: "On a sandy beach." The second participant: "In a beautiful garden." The third: "Trading stock in front of my computer for $8.00 a trade." "It's soooo relaxing!" he croons. At this, participant #1 is off the sandy beach; participant #2 is out of the garden, and the whole class is abuzz with the prospect of getting rich quick.
I think this is a VERY funny ad, in part, because it really does capture the conflict between two opposing human impulses: the positive, healthy need to grow spiritually, and the not-so-positive selfish desire within us to gather as much money and material possessions as possible. It's the basic conflict between spiritual growth versus greed and selfishness.
We must remember that life entails both the spiritual and the physical, and both are important. We cannot live without money, but when accumulation of material possessions turns to greed, lives are inevitably ruined. On the other hand, a person who is totally spiritual with no interest or awareness of the physical world in which he or she lives, will be unable to survive. Finding the right balance between the spiritual and physical is a life-long quest, and a challenge to be taken seriously. In the meantime, let's consider the advice of The Good Book: "Honor the Lord with all your substance, and with the first fruits of thine increase. So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy vats shall overflow with new wine." Proverbs 3:9-10

Dear God, when You created me in Your image, You made me Your child. Help me always to know that nothing can ever lessen the love You have for me -- nothing I have been, nothing I am, nothing I may become. Help me to see and feel Your great love all my days, until my life ends and I return to You, who at the very beginning called me into being. Amen.

The Right Stuff
READ: Galatians 1:6-12
No other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:11
David, I missed you in class today, I told one of my college students when we ran into each other in the Information Services office. He gave me that stunned freshman in the first week of college look, and then it struck himhe had misread his schedule and had gone to the wrong class.
The funny thing was, there were two grammar labsmine, and another professorsand he had attended the wrong one. I told him, Thats okay. You were getting the right information, so I wont count you absent.
As I thought about it, I concluded that this is a little like the options many Christians have regarding the churches they attend. The key factor is to attend a church where the right information is sharedwhere salvation through Jesus Christ is preached (1 Cor. 15:3-5), where the Bible is the standard for faith and practice, and where an opportunity to serve in Jesus name is provided. Its important that the message proclaims the true gospel and the historical message of Jesusnot a different gospel (Gal. 1:6-9). Its not the messenger thats most important; its the message.
What gospel are you hearing? Is it built on the foundation of Jesus Christ? (1 Cor. 3:11).
A guilty sinner needs to hear
The simple gospel true and clear
That tells how Jesus bled and died,
And for mans sin was crucified. D. De Haan
The churchs one foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord.

Thank you Kathy. My wife and I will be in Jerusalem in a month. I am amused by all of the people that think we should cancel. I have lived there and was there for two wars. War might be about to break out, but so be it. If the G-d of the Universe has his hands on us, it doesn’t matter where we are...P.S. I love showing my wife Israel—this is her 4th trip since we have been married. We will retire there, G-d willing.
