WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former US vice president Al Gore took a swipe at global warming doubters Saturday as he opened the Washington leg of the worldwide Live Earth concerts that he helped organize.
Washington was a last-minute addition to the global event months after organizers failed to find a space on the US capital's National Mall, a sprawling green space featuring monuments including the Congress building.
Other events had reportedly already booked spaces for the same day on the Mall, while a subsequent bid by some lawmakers to bring the show to the doorsteps of the US Capitol was blocked by some Republican lawmakers.
But the National Museum of the American Indian finally offered its venue on the Mall for the show, which featured the Native American band Blues Nation and an acoustic performance from country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
"Some who don't understand what is now at stake tried to stop this event on the Mall," the former Democratic presidential candidate said in a thinly veiled hit on members of President George W. Bush's Republican party.
"But here we are," he said as an image of a bright Earth shined behind him. "And it wasn't the cavalry who came to our rescue, it was the American Indian."
A few hundred spectators turned out for the concert, which began at 10:30 am (1430 GMT).
Gore, who has become a leading voice on global warming and won an Oscar for his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," was to appear later at the New York leg of Live Earth.
Live Earth kicked off in Sydney with other shows also taking place during the day in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hamburg, London, Johannesburg and Rio de Janeiro, which are expected to attract an audience of two billion people.
Performers include Madonna, The Police, Keith Urban, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lenny Kravitz.

Which one?
Typical Democrat. Refuses to debate global warming with anyone that disagrees with him. We are just supposed to accept what he says.
Between the costs of “fixing” global warming, socialized medicine, increase labor union power, increased regulation, and MASSIVE increases in taxes, I just can’t wait to see the next Democratic proposal for destroying the economy.
Of course, Gore, the Clintons, Kerry, Kennedy. Edwards, etc are all multi millionaires and will not be touched by their social experiments. Just the rest of us.
Swine.
“But here we are,” he said as an image of a bright Earth shined behind him. “And it wasn’t the cavalry who came to our rescue, it was the American Indian.”
Gag me with a carbon credit.
He is a shameful idiot.
Al Gore: “Never mind the man behind the curtain. Listen to me”.

This is actually very funny...
Wasn’t he derided as a ‘wooden indian’ in 2000?

Is alogre alive or just a cadaver who`s been injected
full of formaldehyde?
I know his/the concerts are boring me to death.
WOW
But he still has his jet and his mansion that uses 12 times as much energy as the average household.
Mr. Gore, might I point out that as a segment of the American population, the American Indians are far more likely to be part of the cavalry and members of the US military? Right, thought this wouldn't matter to you.
The blatent hypocracy of this “event” is sooooo juicy!

Thanks! That reminds me , I need to stock up for the Pepsi 400 tonight. ;-)
I heard him this morning on the news talking about global climate change and “what we can do about it,” and that this concert is supposed to help inform people.
What hit my mind is that this seems very very similar to primitive peoples thinking that they must appease the rain god for rain, the god of the sea for enough fish, the dirt god for great crops, etc. How, pray tell, are Al Gore and his followers ANY different?

BAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!
This fool should talk to my full blooded Indian pal.
He would tear him a new one!
Who are we to DARE question the mighty Goracle?
LOL!
This guy is a joke.
