I'm sure you would like to believe he did.
However, the point I am making and which you are evading is that President Bush campaigned on the very issues for which conservatives are mad at him. If you are one of them, you should have been paying closer attention before casting your vote.
I never considered GWB to be the lesser of two evils. I was content to vote for him both elections. I never expected to get everything I wanted. I have never had a candidate I agree with on every issue.
I don't remember too many conservatives complaining that Pres. Bush was the lesser of two evils back in 2000 and 2004.
It's only recently that I've been hearing this more and more.
Abortion was the biggest issue back in 2000. That and Defense and Taxes. Well, the President delivered on all 3 of those large priorities. So now I guess conservatives don't feel they need to push for those large issues anymore; instead, they need to turn and backstab the man who helped them achieve these goals.
You can't have it both ways. One cannot first tell us that he's better than the alternatives and then tell us if we don't like his position on 100% of the issues we shouldn't vote for him.
His position on immigration is not a suprise. He did also campaign on reforming Social Security. If he'd put 1/100th of the effort into that issue that he has invested in "No Mexican Left Behind," I'd have a little more respect for him.
I would like for anyone on this thread to provide for me their solution to this country’s immigration problems. Don’t simply state round up all the illegals and deport them. Provide specifics on not only how you identify who the illegals are, but also how you “round them up” in order to remove them from this country, especially in light of the fact that there are so many Americans who will not support doing this. You people who keep bashing the President because he understands the complexities of this problem and knows that there is no way to accomplish what you are demanding need to stop and think before engaging your mouths. This problem didn’t happen overnight, and there are no quick and easy solutions to immigration reform, despite what some of you want to have happen.
So, again, I ask - give up your plan to solve this problem or shut up. Stop living in your fast-food “I want things done my way and right now” world and join reality. Put your money where your mouth is and YOU solve this problem instead of just bashing someone for at least attempting what President Bush sees as the best alternative (no that doesn’t mean I agree with Bush’s plan). President Bush at least has the courage to put forth a plan. What have any of you done?
Living in Texas I knew what he thought about immigration reform and could see first hand what had happened here while he was governor. I didn’t particularly like what I saw in that. However, as I said, if it came to a choice of voting for him or Kerry or Gore then there really wasn’t any choice in my mind. I would never vote for a Democrat in this life or any other.
If we simply elected a President to deal with the issues at hand it would be a simple world indeed. But the real challenge of leading anything from the Arabian Horse association to the local Cub Scout den to the United States of America is facing the ever-shifting challenges, adapting, and solving problems. Bush has not appeared all that adroit on any of those fronts.
If conservatives are so furious about Pres. Bush's immigration stance, why didn't they bring it up back in 2000 and 2004? He stated it clearly.
The reason is...conservatives were far more interested in other issues. Immigration was a minor issue to them. President Bush has done much that they wanted. Yet, now that he is pursuing another position he campaigned on he is called a traitor and many are even calling for his impeachment.
Ridiculous.
I’m not saying that everything he has done has been a disaster, far from it. However I do get rather tired of him acting as if he is Kennedy’s water boy. I do understand that a president should and needs to work with the those in other party however, when time after time they kick you in the mouth then it is time to change tactics and it seems he just keeps on coming back for more.
>Maybe if the White House would do the job they were elected to do, instead of pushing the globalist agenda, they wouldn’t have these problems.<
And we wouldn’t have 30-65 million militant invaders here to help them attain that agenda!
1) Heavy fines for employers who hire illegals. 2) Babies born here are not automatic American citizens. 3) Build the fence. 4) Do not provide social services to illegal aliens.
Would that fix it "overnight?" Of course not, but once the money and the freebies dried up, those who were here illegally would be forced to either pursue a genuine path to citizenship or go back to from whence they came. This is not rocket science, as much as the the muckers of the water wish to make it otherwise.
I would say that he has been quite adroit in handling the WOT. And if you want to talk about shifts...this was certainly a major one.
Not only has he had to adapt, he has had to lead a country of 300 million into adapting as well, and managed to do it while steering us into economic prosperity at the same time. Quite a feat.
Ridiculous.
Yes, that is ridiculous. It's also ridiculous to state that the fact that I voted for him in both elections doesn't give me the right to say that his immigration policies are a travesty and represent conservatism in no way shape or form.
Is it ridiculous for the Administration to call people "racists" and "nativists" simply because they oppose his amnesty legislation?
Only problem is, no one's following. Unless your name is eimioutis.
Those are all great ideas, and could go a long way towards fixing the problem. However it’s not as simple as what you suggest. You must know that there are entire cities in this country that have refused to obey immigration laws presently on the books, and would also fail to obey any new laws. The problem is extremely complex and convoluted. The ideas you’ve presented here have been introduced by lawmakers. Getting them passed is the first hurdle. The second, and biggest hurdle is enforcement. There will never be an overnight solution due to the level of opposition these ideas will face.
"Open and transparent government" after trying to sneak the Amnesty thing through in secret and then jam it down our throats when it was exposed?
I really, really like these two statements he just made, but they aren't congruent with what we just went through.
The part about passing spending bills separately is especially good as it will be harder to sneak in bits of the failed travesty if each bill is small and specific. I guess we hope for the best and stay vigilant.
Far from it. He has cooperated with Kennedy on a couple of things (which again were his positions as stated during the campaign...Kennedy didn't convince him of anything).
But taxes, defense, Supreme Court justices, pro-life issues, missile shield, Kyoto, UN World Court, HSA's etc....President Bush has been as far from a Kennedy water boy as you can get.
**”Democrats are failing in their responsibility to make tough decisions and spend the people’s money wisely,” Bush said in his weekly radio address. “This moment is a test.” **
You tell them, Mr. President! Yay!
