Bush rips Democratic lawmakers' failures

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 19 minutes ago

President Bush accused Democratic lawmakers on Saturday of being unable to live up to their duties, citing Congress' inability to pass legislation to fund the federal government.

"Democrats are failing in their responsibility to make tough decisions and spend the people's money wisely," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "This moment is a test."

The White House has said the failure of a broad immigration overhaul was proof that Democratic-controlled Capitol Hill cannot take on major issues. "We saw this with immigration, and we're seeing it with some other issues where Congress is having an inability to take on major challenges," said spokesman Tony Fratto.

The main reason the immigration measure died, however, was staunch opposition from Bush's own base — conservatives. The president could not turn around members of his own party despite weeks of intense effort.

The immigration bill was the top item on Bush's domestic agenda. With its demise, Bush was left to focus on the annual appropriations process and reining in federal spending.

Twelve annual spending bills dole out approximately one-third of the federal budget. They must be passed each year by Congress, before the Oct. 1 start of the new fiscal year, but lawmakers began considering this year's batch just in mid-June. The House has passed half and the full Senate has not yet taken up any.

"Democrats have a chance to prove they are for open and transparent government by working to complete each spending bill independently and on time," Bush said. "I urge Democrats in Congress to step forward now and pass these bills one at a time. "

If these nasty fowled mouth posters were really conservatives I would be ashamed to call myself one.

What in the world are you trying to say?

You’re correct, Bush has NEVER hidden his “compassionate” immigration agenda! It’s silly to say otherwise! Anyway, I was voting for the reduction in taxes primarily and Bush did deliver on that promise. He disappointed me by signing the Campaign Finance Bill, but the immigration agenda was absolutely NO surprise, to me, anyway.

Excellent points.

I don’t see much of a difference between the “Blame ‘Bush” group here on FR and the “Blame Bush” group I see/read/hear on the liberal media.

I also wasn’t aware that many have left FR. I just think if the seasoned citizens of FR don’t want anyone new to post, they should just request that registration be closed to keep FR “pure”.

I don’t remember W saying those who opposed no-child-left-behind didn’t want, “what’s right for America”!

Actually, if immigration didn't surprise you, campaign finance shouldn't have either since he said he would sign it many times during the campaign.

If there's one thing President Bush is it's a man of his word. I guess a lot of conservatives secretly hoped he'd go back on many of his campaign promises. He hasn't.

Don’t let anyone intimidate you. We have several DU posters here. That’s a fact.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

But the truth is that conservative shouldn't have been surprised at the No Child Left Behind bill. President Bush campaigned on it.

Well, they’re doing the liberal media proud by repeating their Bush hatred.

Let me see.... joining the ANG as a pilot with about 18 months of active duty for flight school and mission training, and also requires an average of 5-6 days a month (including the one weekend per month) to meet minimum continued flying training; somehow qualifies as dodging the draft?

I don’t think so.

I have to emphatically state that I’m with you on this laurie_d. While there are areas in which I do not agree with President Bush, I stand behind him 100 percent as he is my commander-in-chief and is presently presiding over this WOT. I would like for anyone on FR or anywhere else to name one President this country has every had who was perfect on all issues. Just name one please. I’m tired of seeing our nation put down by people living in their fast-food, “I want things done my way now” world. We’re at war with people who want to kill all of us regardless of our particular feelings about this or that politician or this or that political ideology. Wake up and grow up people. This is an adult world, and it takes adults to deal with what’s happening.

Omniscient one: Why didn’t you warn us that Bush would vehemently attack his own base over amnesty? I could’ve used some forewarning.

We have several DU posters here.

Most likely you are correct. They signed up some time ago and now can claim seniority and sage-like wisdom over newer posters who post truth.

Unfortunately, we also have quite a few stupid and knee-jerk conservatives who constantly swallow media propoganda.

Pres. Bush's position on immigration hasn't changed over the years.

Please post evidence that Bush's position on immigration was to avoid enforcing present laws in order to help create a crisis, so he could push a comprehensive immigration reform package.

And did he also make a campaign promise to ignore bills HE SIGNED INTO LAW (border fence bill)?

Yes, there are far far fewer comments and posted stories here than there used to be.

And those "seasoned" posters you speak of. Well, there are not so many of them left actually. In the old days there was a lot more intelligent discussion. These Bush-hating, DU-like threads were absolutely non-existent, believe it or not.

Oh, there was dissension. Just not the constant Bush-hating mob mentality.

This is what happens when voters are either forced to vote for the lesser of two evils or stay home and not vote. No one in their right mind would have voted for Gore in 2000 or Kerry in 2004 so the only other choice was Bush or stay at home. We know what staying at home gets us. We have the same thing coming again in 2006 I’m afraid. Choice of Hillary (heaven forbid) or Guiliane or Romney or ???? When the left just keeps going farther and farther left then the right moves in that direction also whether by choice or not. The problem in my humble opinion is where the areas of the country are with the largest poplation. That is eventually going to determine who wins the contest. All I hear is that if there is any chance of getting a Republican in as president we have to vote for a lefty Republican so that person can compete with a Democrat doesn’t inspire a lot of folks to take the time to get out to vote.
