How Fred's Turning Into a $tealth GOP Powerhouse
New York Post ^ | July 7, 2007 | Charles Hurt

Posted on 07/07/2007 6:55:52 AM PDT by Josh Painter

FRED THOMPSON has decided not to declare his candidacy anytime soon, and it's not hard to see why...

Behind the scenes, Thompson and his die-hard supporters are quietly building a huge nationwide campaign for the White House.

In the past 10 days, "Fred's Fans" have:

* Raised more than $1 million with just two fund-raisers, including $300,000 in Atlanta last night.

* Hired key operatives around the country and are in talks with several more recently laid off by John McCain's crumbling presidential campaign.

* Made significant strides toward the nearly $5 million that Thompson's "First Day Founders" have committed to raising as seed money for a full-fledged presidential campaign.

In doing so, Thompson has shown he can raise as much cash as other Republicans who have been in the field for months, if not years...

McCain insiders admit that a major reason they are nearly broke with no real prospects for recovery is that they rushed out and bought a big national campaign way before they were in a position to pay for it.

Thompson isn't going to make that mistake...

Do these conciliatory comments also apply to Rudy?
That is just about the most ridiculous thing I've read this week. Rudy is a cross-dressing pro-abort. There is no parallel between FDT and Rootie--and you know it. The homosexual fellow hired by Thompson is "open" because he was outed by a group of radical homosexuals.

You’re dedicated to Hunter. You’re grasping at some pretty straw-like material.

Again, just asking questions that need to be asked. Remember "Anyone who supports Rudy Giuliani is a traitor?" That's attack mode.

Does Campaign Finance Reform apply, since he’s not a candidate (yet)? I hope not. That would be sweet payback for McCain.

as opposed to Fred, who signed campaign finance reform and acted on the Law and Order set?
Oh, sure--that's his entire career. Thompson's already commented on the CRF-thing, and you Hunter nuts need to give up on the Thompson-was-an-actor routine. So was Reagan. [And before you start with that trash, no, I'm not comparing the two men. They were both actors, though.] PS-- It's not Hunter that I have a problem with. It's some of his supporters.

"This would be Fred...the same candidate who’s hired an open homosexual as a senior advisor.."

If this advisor's a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, I don't care who he doinks at night.

But if he's advocating for Semi-Auto weapons bans, OSHA ammo storage and transportation chicanery or anything else that infringes our RKBA, then I'll be the first one to call for him to be fired. Until then...I'll trust FRed's judgement on this one.

if I was a candidate running for president and the LA Tiimes accused me of being an abortion lobbyist, my reply would be a great deal stronger than "Gee, you know what, I don't ever remember doing that."

That's either senility, or they are weasel words.

That's just Fred's style. He doesn't get bent out of shape and simply states what he means. I, too, prefer Hunter, but would be pickled tink if either became POTUS.

Well, the original question that was asked mentioned that Duncan Hunter hadn't done anything on a national stage. I was merely pointing out that this was sort of like a pot calling a kettle black. As far as the statement that you have no problem with Hunter, but rather his supporters - I suppose that feeling is mutual. It's one thing to approach a primary season with an open mind in an objective search for the solid conservative. It's another thing to be a cheerleader.

A Reagan Republican knows Reagan’s eleventh commandment.

Reagan's 11th commandment was executed two weeks ago on the floor of the Senate.

Ronald Reagan was the host of General Electric Theater from 1953 to 1962. How does that in any way tarnish Ronald Regan as you are implying Law and Order is a black mark against Fred? Lets say fred signed campaign finance reform. That is minor compared to those political hacks in the senate who tried to shove amnesty down our throats.

No candidate is a saint. Duncan got into a shady deal earmarking funds to some half-asss airplane company in his district and got campaign kickbacks.

You misunderstand - Law and Order isn' a black mark against Fred and I've never implied this. The point is, you criticized Hunter for not having accomplishments on a national stage and that this is his own fault. Trying to maintain such an attack while simultaneously supporting Fred Thompson - who has done even less - is pointless.

No candidate is a saint. Duncan got into a shady deal earmarking funds to some half-asss airplane company in his district and got campaign kickbacks.

This has been addressed thoroughly on other threads and is a false charge. At any rate, this isn't a thread about Duncan Hunter. It's a thread about Fred Thompson's conservatism.

well, with you supporting Hunter that's a big strike against him in my book.

Taking a sleazy hit job by the Clintonistas and trying to attack a genuine conservative Republican with a realistic shot at keeping them out of the White House pretty much puts you and ol' Duncan in the wrong camp.  If I find out that any of his paid operatives are peddling this story, not just over eager fan boys like you, then I'll start looking for a primary opponent to support for his House seat.

This is really low.

This would be Fred...the same candidate who’s hired an open homosexual as a senior advisor and has “no recollection” of lobbying in support of abortion?

Disgusting post that repeats MSM lies and guilt by association. I thought Freepers were better than this.

Here's a bit more information about the lobbying job that Fred Thompson has no recollection of. It appears to be a bit more than "he said/she said."

But the minutes of a 1991 board meeting of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Assn. say that the group hired Thompson that year.

His task was to urge the administration of President George H. W. Bush to withdraw or relax a rule that barred abortion counseling at clinics that received federal money,

Regardless of how truthful liberals are (not very), it's highly unlikely that this pro-abortion group drew Fred Thompson's name out of a hat fifteen years ago and falsely entered it in their minutes to guard against the possibility of his running for president in the future.

Shrug. With people like EEE supporting Fred, that's a strike against him in mine. I remain dedicated to finding the most conservative candidate who is going to advance the interests of America and supporting him.
