For Clinton, Faith Intertwines With Political Life

Really? I didn't know that The First Church of Satan funded politicians...

I think Hillary is a devoted Methodist - of the social justice stripe. In these churches (and I’ve been in them) the bible is sort of rewritten from left, to make God over into their own vision of a politically active leftist.

The emphasis isn’t on Jesus and salvation, it’s on social justice. Here’s an interesting tidbit:

“Precocious and confident, 13-year-old Hillary was an active member of her Methodist church in Park Ridge, Ill., when Jones arrived in 1961 to lead the youth group. Fresh from the seminary, he was anything but stuffy in his red Chevy Impala convertible. He carried the Bible, but also the collected poems of E. E. Cummings.

Hillary, politically aware even then, was a budding Republican who took after her staunchly conservative father. In long discussions at the church, Jones introduced Hillary to the left. The young minister was determined to show his white, privileged parishioners the world beyond their suburban town. He took them to the South Side of Chicago to hear Martin Luther King Jr. speak. Jones introduced each of them to the civil-rights leader.”

“But the conversation wasn’t all politics. “Hillary would come up to talk to me after I preached and make comments about the sermon, how the hymns, prayers and Biblical passages were coordinated with the message,” Jones tells NEWSWEEK. Jones hewed closely to the social-justice tradition of the Methodist Church, preaching that helping those in need was a means of practicing their faith.”

For anyone interested in the whole article, it’s here.

Hillary’s brand of Christianity won’t fool evangelicals, just other Democrats with cafeteria faith.

Here’s another interesting tidbit from the article:

“Not everyone appreciated the minister’s lessons. Within two years, the conservative members of the congregation asked him to leave. Jones landed at Drew University in Madison, N.J., where he spent his career teaching theology.”

So the man who shaped Hillary’s religious thought was so much a religious maverick his own church threw him out. Maybe they were upset he was corrupting the kids.

They hired him to be a youth minister and instead he was raising radicals. So the only place he could find was teaching college, his own particular theology in the one place a minister can get away with not preaching the Bible.

Reverend Jones taught his University of Life program, which included a heavy helping of radical politics, poetry, art history, and countercultural thought.

Rev. Jones “developed his privileged suburban students’ social consciences by taking them to visit migrant workers’ children.”

The Rev. Jones, a frequent visitor to the White House
helped preside over the wedding of her brother Tony Rodham in the White House Rose Garden on May 28, 1994.

She isn’t the only cynical player in this story. In the past, any mention of a religious practice in the NYT was accompanied by the verbal suggestion that the practitioner(s) were some kind of quaint oddballs who resided outside of the enlightened and benighted reach of their writers, readers and editors.

Now that the New York Times has found a champion in Hillary, they will find a little religion themselves. At least until after the next election.
