CABBIE HAS FINE WAIVED (Glasgow hero)
The Daily Record ^ | 5 July 2007 | Not Identified

Posted on 07/05/2007 4:20:18 PM PDT by radar101

POLICE have cancelled the parking ticket given to a hero cabbie who took on terror suspects at Glasgow Airport.

Alex McIlveen, 45, left his taxi and laid into two men after a Jeep Cherokee loaded with gas canisters crashed into Terminal One. But when the dad-of-two returned to his car the next morning, after hours of police questioning, he found he had been given a £30 ($60) penalty. At first, police insisted Alex would have to pay up. But, after a call from the Record, they agreed to drop the fine.

A police spokeswoman said: "We realise there were exceptional circumstances at the weekend and we are pleased to say we will not be pursuing Mr McIlveen's ticket."

Alex said: "I'm delighted they have now realised it would be unfair to charge me. "I've ended up losing quite a lot of money already after spending so much time getting interviewed by police when I should have been out driving." He faced down the terror suspects after dropping off a fare. He booted one of them as hard as he could between the legs. A police doctor told Alex later that he had damaged a tendon in his foot. After the drama, police confiscated Alex's trainers for forensic tests.

Reminds me of the scene in Die Hard 2, I think it was: the parking ticket? Art imitating life, and etc...

Just returned from a few days in London. The parking meters there all sport big stickers warning of a 100 pound ($200) fine for allowing your meter to run out.

But, after a call from the Record, they agreed to drop the fine.

One of those rare instances when the media is actually useful.

Remember the ongoing scene in Airplane, where the male protagonist leaves his fare at the terminal with the meter running?

After the drama, police confiscated Alex's trainers for forensic tests.

"As you can see, your honor, the two oval-shaped impressions on the top of McIlveen's right shoe perfectly match the size of the defendant's testicles, which doctors had to pull back down from just below his diaphram."

Shows that even in this age of idiocy, some common sense sneaks through.

Good thing this cabbie was not in the US. The ACLU might have charged him with a hate crime.

Believe it or not, the patient passenger in the cab was Howard “Proposition 13” Jarvis, who led the taxpayer’s revolt in California in the late ‘70s. That’s when California was somewhat sane, I guess.

If they had not, I would have personally paid his fine.

Could me that the "meter-maid" was not aware of the circumstances of the taxi being abandoned. She/he was probably on the scene long after the main players had departed.

Anyway - a happy ending for a brave man.

They should not have even had to think about it. Now the man needs some new shoes. All these reporters, talking to him ought to be taking a ride too and tipping him well.

From the article:

"I don't think the policeman I saw at the scene drew his baton during the whole thing. He should have given it to me - I'd have leathered those guys with it."

Truly a MAN in a world of boys.

From your link:

Scotland) A taxi driver who tackled the Glasgow Airport terror suspects has had his trainers confiscated after kicking the attacker 'in the balls.'

Alex McIlveen, 45, kicked and punched the two men after they crashed a Jeep Cherokee loaded with propane gas intended to cause devastation and destruction in Terminal One.

But rather than being rewarded for his fearless efforts, the police confiscated his favourite pair of trainers for forensic tests.

Alex said: "The police took all the clothes I'd been wearing so I lost my Nike trainers. They're a good pair too."

And as if losing the shirt off his back wasn't bad enough, when the heroic cabbie returned to the airport to pick up his car, he was stunned to find he'd been given a £30 parking ticket.

Alex was one of group of heroic Scots who took on the men who targeted the airport on Saturday afternoon.

He told the Daily Record: "I noticed a 4x4 sitting in the middle of the road. Then, as my passenger was paying and getting out, the Jeep rammed into the airport entrance right next to us.

"Then he kicked and punched a man to the ground before punching a policeman square in the face.

"That's when I saw red. That sort of thing just isn't on.

"I told my passenger to run for her life, then I went for the passenger and managed to skelp him in the face. I followed it up by booting him twice."

The father of two damaged a tendon in his foot after he kicked one of the suspects.

The cabbie said: "I kicked him with full force right in the balls but he didn't go down. He just kept on babbling his rubbish.

"I couldn't believe that he was still standing. I know I would have been floored by that kind of kick."

Then he went after the driver of the vehicle.

"It was obvious the driver wanted into the boot of the Jeep for something and I was worried about what it was. I thought it must be a gun.

"He was going crazy, just lashing out at everyone and babbling p*sh in a foreign language the whole time.

"I've heard people say since that he was shouting 'Allah!' but I didn't hear that. It just sounded like a lot of c**p to me.

"I ran for the guy and punched him twice in the face with pretty good right hooks.

He recalled: "He was a big guy and I'm not really a fighter, but his punches were wild and I managed to dodge them and make some good strikes myself.

"I don't think the policeman I saw at the scene drew his baton during the whole thing. He should have given it to me - I'd have leathered those guys with it."

It was only later at the Paisley police station where Alex was helping detectives with their inquiries that the severity of the incident hit the cabbie.

This man is a HERO! And he better watch his back!

Rules-based bureaucracy alert.
