National Mall Cleared For Fear of Tornados
WASHINGTON — U.S. Park Police evacuated thousands of people from the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday afternoon, as severe weather interrupted July Fourth festivities.
Authorities used loudspeakers to ask Independence Day revelers to clear off the lawn and head to safer locations, including museums lining the National Mall, until further notice.
The National Weather Service has placed all of Maryland under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. ET. That means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. A tornado warning was also issued for an area of Montgomery County, Md., a suburb of the city, and funnel clouds had been spotted in the county. A tornado was also reportedly spotted in Columbia, Md., part of the Metro D.C. area.

Yes, it’s on PBS every year. We’ll see what happens. I hope no one gets hurt out there. I’ve spent many a 4th on the mall. Half a million people or something! It’s a great place to see fireworks. This will have all blown over by 8 p.m. local time, but it does depend on the level of destruction, I guess.

For now it’s a Tornado Watch (entire area)
effective until 10:00 pm
Storm blew through Reston, Va —everything is calm now —was a short, rather violent burst, then gone.....
Should be a good night for the fireworks on the Mall....
This is a pretty run of the mill storm for DC I think.
WMAL reports that police say things should be “back to normal within the hour.” Heard at 3:32 pacific.
Auntie Em... Auntie Em.... I saw Pelosi on a broom ...
The main tower at Dulles airport had been evacuated.
Haven’t heard any reports yet of damage from the tornado
