Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani appears to have flip-flopped on what he thinks about the Supreme Court potentially overturning its landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling. Giuliani hasn't suddenly become pro-life; instead, he told the Wall St. Journal he now won't answer the question of what he thinks.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published over the weekend, Giuliani was asked: Roe v Wade, should it be overturned?
Giuliani demurred, saying, I don't answer that because I wouldn't want a judge to have to answer that."
"I think a conservative strict constructionist judge could come to either conclusion," he added.
Yet, Giuliani has answered the question before -- as recently as mid-May when he said he would be "okay" if the court overturned Roe, but also okay if the court upheld it.
The former New York City mayor made the same comments during the May 3 Republican presidential debate, when he said he would be fine with either outcome.
The Wall St. Journal also asked Giuliani which members of the Supreme Court meet his standards for intellectual honesty and would be the type of judges he would appoint. Ironically, Giuliani named all of the four judges who have either said they would overturn Roe or are considered the most supportive of doing so.
"[Samuel] Alito, [John] Roberts--I would have appointed either one of them," he replied. "[Antonin] Scalia clearly does [meet the standard], and [Clarence] Thomas. I would have appointed any one of the four of them."
Flipping back and forth on issues is a calculated Rooty strategy-——definitely not a product of the jerk “forgetting” what he said, or “changing back,” etc.
Clinton was famous for triangulating issues-—pandering to opposite voting blocs.
Now watch Rooty quadrillionating issues.....pitching pieces to every voter on the political spectrum.
Rooty figures not ALL voters are not tuned in at the same time-——so that blocs of disparate voting blocs will think he stands with them, as they enter the voting booth.
No, they could not.
I did a historical news search on the term "strict constructionist" with respect to Presidential campaigns and the Supreme Court. Interestingly, the first person to widely use the term was Richard Nixon, describing what he would look for in SCOTUS candidates. Nixon appointed Henry Blackmun, the author of Roe v. Wade.
What a fake-phony-fraud. This guy is as bad as any Democrat.
Ping to #42, FYI
The bottom line is that NO president, conservative or liberal, is going to KNOWINGLY appoint a Supreme Court justice with a philosophy that is totally opposite his own.
Roody can say whatever he wants, but why would he appoint anyone who he knows he doesn’t agree with? Would the ‘Rats believe a pro-life ‘Rat who promised to appiont pro-abortion justices?
Roody miscalculated some time ago when he and his advisors decided that conservatives would be willing to overlook the fact that he is a flaming liberal and just focus on terrorism. They didn’t seem to understand that there would be CONSERVATIVES in the race who were even stronger on terrorism (real border security) than Roody.
INCORRECT! Roody is "bizarre" and that makes this behavior totally consistent with everything we've ever seen from him.
I totally agree with you. My only point was that those who say he indeed would appoint a "strict constructionist" should find little comfort in use of the term.
I believe Rudy has shown such extreme mis-judgment in prior appointments and associations, that he should never be allowed to set foot in the White House, let alone be master of the residence and country. Let's take another look at some of his prior hiring decisions, those who were prosecuted and/or resigned in the midst of scandal.
Bernie Kerik
Russell Harding
Richard Roberts (Vernon Jordan's son-in-law)
Alan Placa
Michael Carey
Louis Carbonetti
Guy Velella
Anthony Serra
Anthony Schembri
John Picciano
Raul Russi
Louis Gelormino
Leonard Piccoli
Leon Goldstein
LOL! OK, you have a point there. :)
That’s interesting! Did Nixon believe that “strict constructionist” meant something other than a justice who would interpret the Constitution strictly on what it clearly says, based on what we know of the Founders’ intents? Or did Blackmun stray from what Nixon thought he would do?
From what I read, Nixon gave him the “strict constructionist” label to match his campaign pledge, but Blakmun rejected it. Blackmun definitely evolved.... moving more and more away from originalist type thinking. Roe v. Wade, the death penalty, the environment. He did a heck of a lot of damage during his comparatively short stint on the bench. (IMO, being a Harvard Law graduate and student of Felix Frankfurter should have been a clue).
Correction to my prior post: Harry, not Henry.
Rudy the tapdancer
Absolutely!
Rooty Toot ain't the only liberal who supports the war effort. Joe Lieberman supports the WOT and the battle for Iraq, but conservatives aren't about to nominate Independent Joe to be the GOP nominee. That Hollyweird liberal Dennis Miller also supports the WOT and while he may be a favorite with SOME FReeper`s, he's still a liberal!
To all the Rockefeller Republicans and conservative sell-outs --- Rudy Giuliani is not gonna be the GOP nominee for 2008.
Fantastic research, and excellent points — thanks!
It is my understanding that abortions decreased in NYC when Rudy was mayor. Perhaps you dont like his personal stance, neither do I. However if he reduces abortion, it is much better than having a Pro Life / Strict Constitutionalist who does noting and lets the abomination of abortion continue.
Correlation is not causation.
Abortions nationwide went down when Bill Clinton was in the White House. That doesn't mean we should be supporting Billy Boy, either.
Wow! I am underwhelmed. I guess I have to vote for the non-candidate Thompson who is preselected by the “Party”. Oh, I forgot, this is a private WWW site and the only opinion accepted is the Rudi is out. Sorry, but the man is honest, not a fraud and he ain’t no dummy.
Wow! I am underwhelmed.
I see. That's your best response to facts? You can't challenge their veracity, so you're "underwhelmed"?
Sorry, but the man is honest, not a fraud and he aint no dummy.
I never said he was a dummy. But Rudy is demonstrably not honest, unless you're willing to believe he "forgot" that his pal Kerik was under investigation for Mob ties when he promoted him for Police Commissioner and head of Homeland Security.
Frankly, I don't care who you vote for. I'm very wary of Fred Thompson myself, not knowing what he really stands for. But let's be honest about the declared candidates, shall we?
..."The Dinkins campaign's hardest strike came from the Mayor's campaign manager, Bill Lynch. He asked the United States attorneys in the Eastern and Southern districts to investigate allegations raised in The Village Voice that an Internal Revenue Service agent assigned to Mr. Giuliani when he was United States Attorney in Manhattan resorted to dirty tricks in the late 1980's to smear Mayor Edward I. Koch and Mr. Dinkins. Mr. Lynch called the allegations "serious and substantial" and said they moved beyond partisan politics."
The "agent" was a manager. Calling him an "agent" is to belittle agents inappropriately. He was ingratiating himself to Rudy, was not directed by Rudy and is an idiot, IMHO... certainly not a person connected to LCN but a disappointment nevertheless.
Nixon didn’t do a very good job with the Supreme Court. He appointed FOUR justices—and almost nothing changed! Instead of forming a new majority, most of the Nixon justices by and large joined the existing liberal majority led by Justice Brennan. Blackmun authored Roe, and two of Nixon’s other appointees (Lewis Powell and Warren Burger) signed onto it. Nixon’s only good choice was Rehnquist, who was excellent.
