Sen. Schumer Furious With Bush Over Libby

New York Sen. Charles Schumer late Monday expressed angry opposition to President George W. Bush's commutation of 'Scooter' Libby's prison sentence.

Libby was convicted in March of lying and obstructing an investigation into who revealed the identity of a CIA officer, Valerie Plame, whose husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, had criticized the Iraq war.

"I’m outraged,” blasts Schumer in a flurry of e-mails being shotgunned across the nation by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

Schumer urges recipients to sign a sharp petition directed to President Bush:

"George Bush has commuted the sentence of Scooter Libby and wiped away two and a half years of prison time with the stroke of his pen. President Bush is willfully ignoring Libby’s felony conviction, ignoring the jury’s guilty verdict, and ignoring the rule of law. Our nation deserves better.

"Tell George Bush: "I’m appalled by your actions."

Schumer adds, "We need to show Bush his actions just aren’t acceptable.”

"We expect more from our president,” laments the senator. "We expect honor and integrity, we expect moral leadership. We expect our president and his staff to be held to a higher standard.”

Schumer concludes, "It’s at times like these that I realize just how important a strong Democratic Senate is to our nation. Democrats are fighting the Republican’s abuse of power but we can’t do it without your help.”

The DSCC reminds recipients that it is picking up the tab for the petition and the communications and that no candidate or candidate’s committee has authorized the petition.

Does Chuckie really want to open this "can of rotten worms" regarding commutations and pardons ... considering the field day that could be had on other President's motives and 'lack of regard for the Rule of Law' on their similar actions.

Schumer is furious?

That, in itself, is justification for the commutation.

Happy Fourth!

They’re going make him testify at one of their dog and pony shows to get him to spill his guts on Cheney.

I don't know if that's going to work. He'll plead the Fifth, and if they try to compel his testimony they'll end up providing one additional piece of ammunition in his large stockpile that will be used to overturn his conviction (i.e., compelling his testimony in a case that is still under appeal).

Has Mr. Schumer ever answered how his office received a copy of Michael Steele’s credit report? Truthfully?

I expected more from our former National Security Advisor. What I got was a clown stuffing classified documents in his codpiece and then destroying the documents. What he got was a slap on the wrist. Scooter gets three in the joint while Sandy stuffs classified documents next to the joint and walks. You see a problem here Senator Chuck?

Jay Inslee was on the news this morning saying that “Congress isn’t finished with Libby.” They’re going make him testify at one of their dog and pony shows to get him to spill his guts on Cheney. Cracked me up.

I found this interesting post from one of the other Libby threads yesterday:

Welcome to America, where the judicial branch legislates, the legislative branch executes wars, and the executive branch metes out justice.

Anything that “outrages” Shmuck Schumer has about a 95 percent chance of being right.
