Pelosi to preside at Democrats' convention in Denver

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is the Democratic Party's choice to chair the 2008 Democratic National Convention, officials announced Monday.

Officials say the chairwoman and co-chairs are to preside over convention proceedings to "ensure order, decorum and efficiency."

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was chairman of the 2004 convention.

In Pelosi, Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean has picked the first woman to become speaker of the House, a post she has used to try to remove U.S. troops from the war in Iraq.

But the San Franciscan is also frequently cited by Republicans as out of the mainstream.

Colorado's GOP chairman, Dick Wadhams, said the choice would play to conservative critics.

"It absolutely confirms everything I've been saying for several months now, that the Democratic National Convention will reflect a very liberal, extreme-left viewpoint," he said.

Former Democratic state party chairman Chris Gates called Wadhams' criticisms "an old stereotype" and said Pelosi had shown herself as speaker to be "a strong, thoughtful political leader."

In a prepared statement, Pelosi said she would be honored to serve.

"At the convention," she said, "Democrats will share with the American people our priorities and values that will take our nation in a new direction."

Dean also said he would nominate three to serve as co-chairwomen: Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who leads the National Governors Association; Texas state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, president of the National Conference of State Legislatures; and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, president of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors.

The nominations will be presented to the convention's rules committee and voted on by delegates at the opening session of the Aug. 25-28 convention being held in Denver.

I'd like to see her Nancy Pelosi brag about her party's non-existent agenda next year.

How come the dem party is always talking about taking the country or party into a new direction then they come out and talk about the same old issues. If they are always taking the party and the country in a new direction or shaking their fists and “fighting” for everyone then my question is this: “How come the very people they are fighting for or taking into a new direction never get to improve (according to the party). Evidently they can’t do anything and haven’t done anything for their party or their country in years. All they can says is what they are GOING TO DO. What HAVE they done??? Nothing. Nanceee needs to make important sounding statements like this but they are words and words alone. Talk about an empty suit!!!

I believe it’s only right that Pelosi, the top socialist in Congress, should preside at the Democrats’ convention.

Guess whose name she will put into nomination for the Democrat/socialist candidate for president. OOOH! I cant wait.

Has Dean ever met Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio?
