WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter defended conservative pundit Ann Coulters incendiary commentary Monday, saying Coulter was closely approaching that level of being a great American.
The comments by Hunter, a Republican representative from California, came in an interview on MSNBCs Hardball, where he was asked for his reaction to criticism of Coulter by Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, a Democratic presidential candidate.
Elizabeth Edwards telephoned into Hardball last week during an appearance by Coulter to complain about attacks by Coulter that suggested that the Edwardses were exploiting the death of their son in 1996 for political gain. But Hunter refused to join the near-unanimous condemnation that has greeted Coulters remarks.
Well, I think what Senator Edwards wife said was very consistent with what lots of Democrats and lots of liberals have said since the amnesty bill went down in flames, said Hunter, who has positioned himself to the right of the leading Republican presidential candidates. And that is that we need to silence conservative voices.
Coulter has called Hunter her first choice for president, and Hunter returned the praise Monday, calling the conservative radio talk show host a particularly articulate spokeswoman for the conservative view.
Especially since Ann Coulter said nice things about me, I think shes closely approaching that level of being a great American, he said.
Too often, he complained, when conservatives talk, they are considered to talk in a mean way, and yet when Democrats talk, theyre exercising their right to free speech and theyre simply conveying a philosophy.

Ann I love you, I brought you a plate of food...
PING
How about "I think shes ... a great American, and leave it at that?
Nice to see how the MSM labels Hunter a complainer. More of what we’ve come to expect, but nice of them to be so blatant about it.
I’m pulling for Hunter, but will admit that I’ll be happy if/when Thompson joins the race as he seems to be a decent candidate with larger exposure.
Yeah, I wish he would have said that too.
Be advised you now have authority to direct Hunter to draft Ann for the Veep slot.
Hunter/Coulter '08
He said it in a playful kind of way. You’d hae to see it to notice. Mocking Hannity, I think.
Amen. I love this guy more and more.
I’ll join in part of this party.
Duncan Hunter did NOT defend any specific comments by Ann Coulter, thank God.
I think Ann is a scourge on conservatism with her nastiness, and I think that is exactly why Hunter artfully did NOT agree to any of her quotes except to say that she likes him and is an “articulate” conservative voice.
No. You missed the context. MSNBC tries to make it sound like feint praise. It was anything but.
Hunter also did not sprint to the mics at CPAC Like Rudy “Schumer” McRomney to condemn Ann for he faggot quip regarding PC and Edwards.
Hunter could care less that Ann spits fire at these crapweasels.
LOL, go Hunter!
Coulter will have to settle for Sec of State. :o)
He’s good.
Do you think she is going commando?
This is gonna be good!
