Iranian unit killed our troops in Iraq, says US

By David Blair
Last Updated: 2:23am BST 03/07/2007

A secret force attached to Iran's Revolutionary Guard carried out a sophisticated attack which killed five American soldiers in Iraq, the US claimed yesterday.

For the first time, America laid out evidence allegedly showing an Iranian hand behind a specific assault. In the past, Britain and America have only made general accusations of Iranian support for insurgents.

Teheran has vigorously denied the charges.

But Gen Kevin Bergner, a US military spokesman, set out in detail what he called Iran's responsibility for an attack in the Shia holy city of Karbala in January.

The assault was, he said, carried out by the Quds Force, a paramilitary unit affiliated to the Revolutionary Guard.

Gunmen who spoke English and wore US-style uniforms talked their way through a number of checkpoints and penetrated a government compound in Karbala. Once inside, they killed one US soldier and captured four others, all of whom were later killed.

"The Quds Force had developed detailed information regarding our soldiers' activities, shift changes and defences, and this information was shared with the attackers," said Gen Bergner.

The source for this claim, he added, was a Hizbollah fighter who was captured by coalition forces in southern Iraq.

Iran's defence minister, Mustapha Mohammed Najjar, said the US accusations were "sheer lies".

I fully agree. This ex-infantryman thinks that the Big Blue Wrecking Crew (USAF) is the right solution to this problem. Remember, more rubble means less trouble.

A U.S. military explosives expert displays explosives used by Iraqi militants, including the 'EFP' armour-penetrating roadside bomb (far L), in the Green Zone in Baghdad July 2, 2007. Senior Iranian leaders know about the operations of Iran's Qods Force in fomenting violence in Iraq, the U.S. military said on Monday, in some of the most direct accusations yet against Tehran over the chaos in Iraq. Faster please. . . .

MORE JITTERS IN MOSCOW

In a further sign that Moscow is souring on cooperation with Iran, yet another prominent Russian politician is publicly warning about Iran's maturing nuclear ambitions. During recent diplomatic contacts between Moscow and Tehran, "[t]he Iranians obstinately dodged straightforward questions about their nuclear program," Mikhail Margelov, the head of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, Russia's upper chamber of parliament, has told a leading Russian news agency. "From this and other signs I had a feeling that Iran is working on a nuclear weapon." Iran, moreover, is making progress, according to the Russian parliamentarian. From Iran's uncompromising diplomatic posture it is possible to deduce that Iran "has a maximum of five years left before it tests its own nuclear bomb," Margelov has said. I hope none of our soldiers fired back at the Iranians or they might be charged with murder.

"Iran Democracy Monitor No. 48, July 3, 2007", post 26.
I think Georgy and Puties little talks in Maine will produce some benificial results.
Russian wants to sell us tons of oil. OK we buy oil from the Russians and they give in to giving Iran a false sense of security. The Chinks will stay neutral.
The Russkies can continue deals for the gas pipelines with the Persians. But the nuclear programs must be shut down.
Of course GWB will have a hard time convincing Putin not to sell arms to Iran. After all, we do it as well as everyone else with every two bit country.

Ya know, there’s a lot of talk about how the president is a lame duck and can’t act, etc. But this is a dude that can say the word and send the finest military the world has ever seen to smash the hell out of anything and anyone he chooses. Political capital be damned... he doesn’t NEED political capital any more. Let’s just go in there and do what needs to be done, and stonewall the damn demorats when they try to interfere. He doesn’t NEED anyone’s approval any more.

It’s not like it would be an illicit war. We have endured provocation after provocation from these morons for thirty years. It’s time for US to be comin, and hell’s comin with us.
