Family Sues Over Delayed Execution

Toledo, Ohio (AP) -- The mother of a condemned inmate whose execution took an hour longer than is typical sued the head of Ohio's prisons Monday, asking the state to change the way it carries out death sentences.

It took almost 90 minutes to execute Joseph Clark in May 2006; executions last 20 minutes on average. The lawsuit said the execution amounted to unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment.

Joining Irma Clark and her family at a news conference Monday was Michael Manning, whose brother David was killed by Clark in November 1984.

"Nobody should have to die a horrible death," Manning said.

The lawsuit was filed in Cincinnati federal court on behalf of Clark's estate, which lists his mother as administrator.

Prison staff had problems finding a useable vein on Clark, and one vein they did use collapsed. The execution team also apparently tried to administer the lethal drugs through the original IV line by mistake, according to written accounts that the execution team is required to submit.

During the first injection attempt, Clark, 57, finally pushed himself up and said, "It don't work."

It took 22 years and over 90 minutes to finally get justice.

Any execution that the condemned doesn’t walk away from is a success, as far as I’m concerned.

Jeez, this lady’s son got to live just a little longer and she’s bitching. Go figure.

"That's and hour and 10 minutes of my life I'll never get back!", Clark complained.

I don’t know why the firing aquad isn’t used for all of them.

Eye blink quick, sure as anything can be, and nobody is going to take more than a millisecond to die.

I had the same thought. Was the man really in pain, other than emotional distress? Let's go back to firing squads. We got no complaints from the condemned after those.

"Nobody should have to die a horrible death," Manning said.

Is she REALLY stupid enough to say THAT at her murdering son's execution?

Nitrogen Asphyxiation

Simply the cleanest, no mess, no fuss, eco-friendly, low cost, painless, means of execution.

No more messing with veins and needles
No more broken necks or decapitations
No more cleaning up of bio hazardous waste
No more poisons
No more costly buildings
No more lawyers complaining about cruel and unusual.

Simply strap the condemned to a gurney, apply a mask, turn on the flow of pure nitrogen, wait 5 min and then check for brain activity. If no brain activity, then done. If brain activity ... wait another 5 min. Repeat as long as required to observe all brain activity stopping.

She should just be happy that Ohio replaced Old Sparky with that wussy lethal injection crapola.

I can't define just how, but a firing squad or hanging has the sense of justice being carried out, in a way that lethal injection doesn't.

To paraphrase Archie Bunker, would she have felt better if they pushed him out a window?

Shooters can miss … guillotine probably has a higher rate of success. ;-)

Yeah, and an asteroid could impact the site :) - just kidding, but a dozen riflemen at ten paces aren’t going to miss much.

If that is what they are concerned with they can set up 12 rifles on permanent stands bolted to a concrete floor.

Cheap and effective.

Yes, but victims of the guillotine tend to squirm around a bit while the blood drains from their bodies. Allegedly, one victim actually tried to start a conversation while his head was laying in the basket.

Why don’t they just deny them food and water and starve them to death. I hear that’s a very euphoric way to die. How’s that for compassion?

How about just having the guard put a bullet in his head?

Firing squad, guillotine, dropped from 30 thousand feet … all work for me. Lethal injection is too easy, even though the results are the same.
