Phone calls 'failed to set off UK bombs'
News.com.au via Herald Sun ^ | July 03, 2007 | From correspondents in London

THE attempted London car bombings were meant to be detonated by calls to mobile phones in the two vehicles, but failed for technical reasons, the Evening Standard reported today.

The calls made on the phones allowed police to trace those behind the failed attacks last Friday, the London daily evening newspaper said, without giving sources.

The phones were meant to set off blasts when they were called, but the devices failed to detonate the mixture of gas canisters and nails in the two Mercedes cars parked in London's entertainment district.

The bombers called the car outside the "Tiger Tiger" nightclub on Haymarket off Piccadilly Circus twice and the car in nearby Cockspur Street off Trafalgar Square four times, it said.

What were they thinking? The picked from the pictures I saw and S class Mercedes, a car built like a tank. I know because I have basically the two door version (SL) and it still weighs in excess of over two tons.

The should have used a Mini. Anyone remember that controversial VW commercial where the suicide bomber sets off the bomb the and VW contains it; it was hilarious and guess who objected?

My bet is they forgot to take the regulator valves off the propane tanks and then with the one that did catch fire they just opened it up which would be equivalent to setting the high flame on a BBQ grill.

failed for technical reasons

If not for the grace of God, the bombings would have succeeded.

Thank God they chose the wireless network that drops more calls than any other...

I guess this puts the complaints about “dropped calls” and cellular unreliability into proper perspective, eh?

It looked like an old '90s E class to me (I'm a merc owner too).

The should have used a Mini.

I think they were looking for a sturdier vehicle, one that could take more weight without the body dropping down on the axles as that's a give-away in a city where cops are on the look out for potential car bombs.

What I would like know, is what time the calls were made to the cellphones they recovered - if they were before or after the vehicles were ditched.

A simple “2 missed calls” etc on the displays can be misinterpreted... they could have, and should have, tested the receiving phones before their triggering devices went live, and may not have bothered to clear the test calls.

Yup -- We often forget God's hand of Providence.
We should all be grateful and thankful that HE hasn't forgotten us.
