The Gore-y Details of an Inconvenient Truth; Follow the Money, Not the Science.

Cross-Posted On: THE MINORITY REPORT.

Al Gore offers us some good, fatherly advice in his newest book, Assault on Reason.

"We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth."

We should start by applying such an analysis to Gore’s recent movie-making adventure; An Inconvenient Truth.

For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."

Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.

The complete and thorough debunking of Al Gore’s forays into the world of learned men should come as no great shock. Nor would it even completely disprove the possibility of anthropogenic global warming. It’s quite possible that Al Gore has beclowned himself beyond the point where the ridiculous can even make us laugh.

Whether Al Gore is trying to actually lie to us, or whether he’s just spreading the pungent stuff that fertilizes all those tobacco crops he used to harvest by hand every summer as a boy, it could be unfair to even compare Al Gore’s advocacy to the so-called science of the IPCC. After all, Al Gore invents more data, while the IPCC makes data disappear.

Yet all of these revelations beg a fundamental question. Why would anyone as sloppy as Al Gore, or as subtly mendacious as Michael Mann distort evidence? If the real concern here is the wellbeing of the planet, and the commonweal of mankind, a commitment to the truth above all else would serve to differentiate the heroes from the knaves.

Actually, I tend to think it does. Every actual policy that attempts to limit the emissions of Greenhouse Gases, also seeks to establish a controlling interest over the world’s supply of carbon-based energy. They want you to think Captain Planet is here to save us, but in reality, enacting Kyoto on a worldwide basis would have given birth to an OPEC raised on cattle steroids.

The profits potentially available to the carbon cartel are measured in tens of trillions of dollars. Those profits would take a variety of forms around the world: tax revenues to governments; bribes to government officials; valuable carbon "credits" and "allowances" that governments allocate to favored parties; and many, many jobs for diplomats, politicians, regulators, tax collectors, lawyers, and lobbyists. Other winners would include the industries that compete with carbon-based fuels: hydro-power (mostly government owned), nuclear (still a long-shot in the U.S.), and such "alternative" energy sources as windmills and solar.

Those who back Kyoto and who make Global Warming™ documentaries are very well aware of the possibility to coin money. Worse than that, the vast majority of this money is redistributed, rather than created. Al Gore’s giant offset farm will only make it harder to feed the poor, not easier. The entire scheme smacks more of a corrupt medieval pope selling saint’s relics and indulgences, than an advocate of reason and truth.

If the carbon cartel succeeds, it will cause direct economic damage on an unprecedented scale. More frightening, however, is the collateral damage it would inflict on our political institutions. It would corrupt the world's governments; set them in opposition to consumers and to free trade; seduce them into converting market economies into planned economies; and divert vast resources from productive uses to political ones.

Given the cartel-like nature of the proposed Clinton Health Security Plan, it should also come as no particular shock that Al Gore and President Clinton were involved in intense negotiations with the master manipulator of energy prices and supplies. They spent much the run-up to the negotiations that led to the Kyoto Treaty working hard on energy policy with none other than Enron.

Relying on internal Enron memos, CEI specifically requested documents from various Cabinet-level agencies relating to the following Enron's lobbying efforts and the Clinton administration's cooperation:

An August 4, 1997 meeting in the Oval Office between a few high rolling CEOs such as Enron's Ken Lay, and President Clinton and Vice President Gore, addressing possible Clinton administration's positions at the upcoming (December 1997) treaty negotiations in Kyoto, Japan.

A July 1997 meeting for select, invited industry participants (e.g., Enron) hosted by the White House, including Clinton and Gore, regarding that administration's case for policy action on the theory of man-made climate change.

A February 20, 1998 meeting between Ken Lay and Energy Secretary Federico Pena, staffed by Dan Adamson (Special Assistant to Deputy Secretary Betsy Moler), and L.G. Holstein (Pena Chief of Staff). This meeting addressed Enron's lobbying/policy desires regarding the Clinton administration's approach to restructuring the electricity system, specifically legislative positions and strategies and whether to include "climate change" policies in any such effort.

Ken Lay's February 20, 1998 correspondence to President Clinton "to ask for [Clinton's] personal involvement in passing [electricity] legislation...", written at the request of Energy Secretary Pena during their closed-door meeting earlier that same day.

The "Clean Power Group," including Enron, El Paso, Calpine, NiSource, PG&E National Energy Group, and Trigen Energy, whose internal documents reflect they coordinated with Environmental Defense, Natural Resources Defense Council, Clean Air Task Force, Sierra Club, and the following industry trade groups among others: Interstate Natural Gas Association, Gas Turbine Association, Solar Energy Industry Association, American Wind Energy Association, American Gas Association, Business Council for Sustainable Energy. This coalition sought policies in effect implementing the Kyoto Protocol's energy-use limitations without first obtaining Senate ratification.

Private administration meetings with the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. Enron was the marquee member of this group's Business Environmental Leadership Council, and they worked together on certain of Enron's lobbying goals.

Private meetings between Enron employees John Palmisano and/or Mark Schroeder, and senior government officials Dirk Forrester (DOE), Dan Reifsnyder (State Department), Howard Gruenspecht (DOE), T. J. Glauthier (OMB), Rafe Pomerance (State Department), David Doniger (EPA), David Gardiner (EPA), Rob Walcott (EPA), William White (EPA), Nancy Kete (EPA), Joe Kruger (EPA), Jane Leggett-Emil (EPA), and Lisa Carter (EPA). This request particularly seeks information regarding specific discussions that occurred during the first two weeks of October 1997, as Clinton administration finalized its Kyoto position.

So as skeptics come forward and dispute the arrogant assertion that the science is now settled, people with major investments in anthropogenic global warming begin to worry, and their voices become strident. In industry, the cartel-mongers in the energy industry have begun to turn on one another.

As the likelihood of the US Congress enacting legislation to establish a carbon cartel declines, Al Gore perceives an assault on something far more near and dear to him than the abstract virtues of reason. Rather than the US energy consumer getting gored, it looks like Al Gore’s offset farm is getting oxed. That’s not a polar ice-cap you see melting on TV, instead, it’s the credibility of people who used to take Al Gore seriously enough to lend him investment capital.

It’s still unsettling to see Dr. Heidi and the Weather Channel reporting on AUTO EMISSIONS all weekend.

I would be unfair to compare Gore's work to that of the IPCC. With Gore the debate is over. With the IPCC, the debate goes on.

And I do like where a local bookstore was placing the '20% off stickers' on Gore's book "Assault on Reason." It made the title read "Ass on Reason." :)

All you have to know about Al Gore is that he was Bill Clinton’s Vice President.

Get with the program. Global WarmingTM is out; Global Climate ChangeTM, or GCCTM, is in.
