LONG KNIVES OUT AFTER BORDER BILL ("It wasn't the people's will. And they were heard.")

I asked one of the few conservative Republican senators who stuck with President Bush on immigration to assess how Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell handled the issue. Asking not to be quoted by name, he replied: "If this were a war, Sen. McConnell should be relieved of command for dereliction of duty." Not only did the minority leader end up voting against an immigration bill that he said was better than the 2006 version that he supported, but he also abandoned his post, keeping off the floor during final stages of Senate debate.

Novak attributes the opposition to xenophobia. Were all just neurotic you know.Robert Novak has literally spent the last 50 years reporting on the minutiae of Washington inside baseball. He has not the faintest idea what is happening in the real America, outside the hothouse beltway bubble.

Behind closed doors, under the cover of darkness, their meetings went something like this. I'm pretty sure anyway. LOL!

McConnell was among six switchers who voted no after the 40 senators needed to kill the bill were recordedWho are the 6? We need to make sure that their mendacity is widely broadcast.

I am reminded of Lou Dobbs saying: “To call illegal aliens ‘undocumented workers’ is like calling drug dealers ‘unlicensed pharmacists.’”

Then the leadership of the national committee should be undermined and repudiated by the party membersstarting with the states GOP. You know, that is a excellent idea. I will look into my state organization and see if I can spread that idea. Thanks!

Doesn't necessarily require a constitutional amendment ... "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof,...".
It's not much of a stretch to state that those in the country illegally are not "subject to the jurisdiction thereof".

It is probably too much of a stretch. "Subject to the jurisdiction thereof" has always been understood to exclude only those over whom the United States disclaims full jurisdiction. Only two categories of people ever got this status: accredited diplomats, and Native Americans living on reservations, and Congress subsequently bestowed native-born citizenship upon the Native Americans.
A statute ending birthright citizenship for illegal aliens would have to suppose that "subject to" can be glossed as "accepting and obeying," and, even then, tourists, students, and other non-permanent aliens would have birthright citizenship for their children born in the United States. I somehow doubt that the Supreme Court would go for that aggressive a gloss.
The one thing I don't see happening is the U.S. disclaiming jurisdiction over illegal aliens -- talk about an amnesty!
It's also important to recognize that the Supreme Court will apply "strict scrutiny" to this analysis -- meaning that any impairment of these rights must be (essentially) a last ditch, only-thing-that-works effort to serve a compelling interest.
And there we can probably all agree that a solid system of employer verification and employer sanctions is far less radical and will nevertheless virtually eliminate illegal immigration and compel the vast majority of illegal aliens to return home under their own steam.

LOL! That’s hilarious, and oh-so true!

With rare exception my family is overwhelmingly liberal. For the first time in years, we could all be in a room together and agree on something.
The rage about our borders not being protected crosses party lines and the anger about the illegals is shared. You're right - if people remember, this is going to be one strange election.

re: Recall that few Republicans during that time would even mention and certain not run on a platform regarding immigration.))) I have come to believe that at least some of our 06 losses were deliberately engineered by the Republican National Committee--to provide a "Congress Bush Could Work With."
Imagine that--not only does Bush sell out America, he gets the party elites to sell out the party!!
Secretary Rumsfeld's post-electoral "resignation" ... am I the only who recalls more than one defeated Republican Congressman/Senator claiming a pre-electoral resignation could have saved their seat?

Ah....and you even used my "signature color" ---what a FRiend!
Hey, we're going to the Freedom Concert again this year. I'll be taking pics like last year.
I've been posting that Duncan Hunter should go to ours, and it looks like he's decided to do so!!!! This will be great PR for him. He's such a good guy. I don't know if he will be able to be President, but he's definitely qualified and would do a WONDERFUL job. I'm glad we have so many good ones to choose from!
Thanks again!

I hadn’t heard of the Mexicans having a goat slaughter ritual but I do know that the somali’a / muslims do have a certain way to slaughter goats. (my kid used to raise them and knew someone who allowed them to buy the goats and let the slaughter them on his land)
