WASHINGTON - The South, which powered George W. Bush to the presidency twice, is flexing its political muscle again in the Republican presidential campaign, this time for a native Southerner, former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee.
Thompson's all-but-declared candidacy for the GOP's 2008 nomination got even more all-but-declared Wednesday with a fundraising trip to Columbia, S.C., where he was quick to remind his fellow Republicans that he was one of them.
"I just came from Nashville. I don't feel like I've left home," he said to a rousing welcome.
The trip came amid new polls showing the Alabama-born ex-senator surging toward the top of the 10-candidate GOP field. Thompson leads the field in new polls in South Carolina, Georgia and Nevada and is second in Iowa, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Despite his long ties to Washington -- he has earned at least $507,000 as a lobbyist -- Thompson's folksy deep-fried manner is winning over Southerners who had not warmed to the other top-tier Republicans: New Yorker Rudy Giuliani, New Englander Mitt Romney and Westerner John McCain.

There’s something about a Southern man that drives Northeastern feminists insane. That alone makes a lot of Northeastern men want to vote for them.
Mind you, John Edwards is a Southerner, but hardly a man.
I live in New England and I really like Fred.
I hope he wins the nomination in 2008.
I, a connoisseur of men, agree! Now, Fred, there's a REAL man!
The fact that Hillary attacked him the other day shows what a threat she considers him to be.
As my tag line says, I am happy not to be in the USA now.
Fred Thompson`s brand of conservatism could be a winner.
I like him but he stutters and says ‘uh’ every other word.
When I heard him on Hannity he seemed rather bland. Not insipring.
But I’d vote for him.
Southerner Thompson-—codeword to liberals and minorities, that Thompson is to be be feared and smeared as a redneck confederate flag flying racist!
We don't claim him as such here.
I really like Fred, but you are correct abou the “uh’s.” Sometimes he seems really sharp in his speeches, interviews, etc. and other times not so sharp. I am certain that will he will get more consistent.

He needs to get himself some damn contact lenses and get podiums that are high enough for him to see his note cards. Having to put his glasses on in the middle of a sentence to read his note cards is ridiculous.
He has a fantastic speaking style, but that kind of stuff has to go.
Lots of people can’t wear contact lenses.
Hey, I used to camp up there at Vista Lookout (I think that’s the name) back in the 80’s. They stopped us from doing that and declared it some kind of wildlife viewing area or some such in the early 90’s. Haven’t seen the name in awhile. Wonderful Country.
of course. we have a real man her not some emasculated metromale.
I'm sure the South is not sending its best men to Washington.
At least, I hope not.
I'm from the icy tundra of Minnesota and he's got my vote when he decides to enter the race.
