What's the Rush?

That's the question Bobby Schindler asked in the case involving Jesse Ramirez, the Arizona man whose case paralleled that of Schindler's sister, Terri Schiavo, until Ramirez woke up. The Arizona Republic reports:

...Bobby Schindler of the Florida-based Terri Schindler Shiavo Foundation placed the blame on a medical establishment quick to dismiss patients with brain injuries.

Schindler is the brother of Terri Schiavo, a brain-damaged Florida woman who died in 2005 after a decades-long court battle.

"What is the rush?" he asked. "This is not the first time we've heard of cases like this where doctors want to write off the chance of recovery, and the family, when they're told this, will make a decision to end a person's life.

"In the case of Mr. Ramirez, he'd be dead now."

Why is Jesse alive? His family sought legal intervention with the help of the Alliance Defense Fund:
His siblings and parents refused to give him up for dead, and today, Jesse Ramirez is alive and conscious.

Two weeks ago, he was the center of a family battling over of whether he should live or die.

Now, he can hug and kiss, nod his head, answer yes and no questions, give a thumbs-up sign and sit in a chair.

Associated Press recognizes at least in part that Senator Brownback's alliance with Terri Schiavo's brother may boost his bid for the Presidency.

As can be expected of AP and similar media, they get the facts wrong consistently on Terri's condition.

................................

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful Sam Brownback is counting on his conservative credentials and a Midwest bond to lift his candidacy in Iowa.

The Kansas senator is waging a grass-roots campaign. He's also being persistent in garnering support from social and religious conservatives.

He hopes he can show consistency for his views on issues such as abortion -- unlike GOP rival Mitt Romney who's been criticized for shifting his stances.

That will be the test as he gets back on the campaign trail today. Brownback will be accompanied by the brother of the late Terri Schiavo, who was in a permanent vegetative state for 15 years before dying in 2005 after her feeding tube was removed.

Her case sparked a firestorm over end-of-life issues and energized religious conservatives.

Brownback's effort to court conservatives may be paying off

Sometimes truth stings...

...........................

In a speech to the Minnesota atheists last Sunday, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison broke one of the most important, yet unwritten rules in political speech: The Minnesota Democrat used an analogy involving Nazi Germany to score political points.

~Snip~

Kersten is no stranger to using a Nazi analogy to score political points. Last year, she compared those who thought Terri Schiavo had a right to die with dignity (a majority of Americans at the time) to the Nazis. Much like Ellison's gaffe, it's a loose analogy:

"People of goodwill may disagree about Terri Schiavo's case. Yet as our society strays from its traditional belief in the essential dignity of every human life, we all must grapple with the implications of the notion that some lives are "not worth living."

...Some German intellectuals championed this idea well before the Nazi era began. A 1920 book, for example, decried "the meticulous care shown to existences which are not just absolutely worthless" -- the disabled and deformed -- "but even of negative value." It called for applying the "healing remedy" of premature death, in order to "eliminat[e] those who were born unfit for life or who later became so."

...Today, we must ensure that we ourselves are not tempted to start down this slippery slope --moved by free choice rather than totalitarian edict, and seduced by a shallow notion of "death with dignity."...........................................................................

A Nazi Analogy is Never a Good Idea

This tidbit is embedded in a lengthy discussion of morality in the Intellectual Conservative...

If a normal baby is born, but later suffers a horrific brain injury and becomes a little Terry Schiavo (or survives to adulthood and then becomes an actual Terry Schiavo), does it transition at this point from human to non-human status? Is a person with half of a functioning brain only half-human? Why does it matter at all if the brain functions, or has yet to develop from the fertilized egg? It matters only if someone wants to arbitrarily assign a different value/status to that human being, because this allows them to do something to their body that the Universal Moral Code would otherwise prohibit them from doing.

The more things change...

Thread from wagglebee.

LONDON, July 13, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK's Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has warned that newly appointed Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is likely to be as bad a choice for Britain's unborn children and vulnerable persons as his predecessor, Tony Blair.

After serving from 1997 to 2007 as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Brown became Prime Minister on June 27 2007 when Tony Blair stepped down.

SPUC's political secretary Anthony Ozimic, points to Brown's consistently pro-abortion voting record. In one year alone, 1990, Brown voted 16 times in favour of the abortion lobby.

Although I don't think always kind thoughts about Bill O'Reilly, I am glad he lends his presence and weight to exposing killer tiller for what he is to our population in general. Thread from wagglebee.

WASHINGTON, July 13 /Christian Newswire/ -- Hugely popular radio and television commentator Bill O'Reilly of Fox News has done several exposes of infamous third-trimester abortionist George Tiller of Wichita, Kansas. Tiller operates one of the largest abortion businesses specializing in terminating fully viable babies nearing their due dates.

The Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK), founder of Faith and Action in Washington, DC, and president of the National Clergy Council, will travel to Wichita tomorrow to lead a candlelight prayer vigil near Tiller's abortion business at 5107 E. Kellogg, Wichita. Other national leaders scheduled to participate in weekend events include the Reverend Troy Newman of Operation Rescue, the Reverend Patrick J. Mahoney of Christian Defense Coalition, Norma McCorvey, the former "Jane Roe" of Roe v. Wade, and Wendy Wright of Concerned Women of America.

Whose definition of "true conservative" are you using? In reading various threads over the last couple of weeks, I have seen that term tossed around a lot--usually by one person accusing another of not being one. So everybody has their own idea of what "true conservative" means.

I choose not to define myself by that term or any other. I am more conservative than some people on some issues, less so than other people on other issues. I cherish and support the right to think for myself, the right of self-determination for the individual, the freedom to reject group-think, and all the freedoms and rights granted to each and every American by our Founding Documents. I abhor government tyranny, bureaucratic waste, and anything that abridges our freedoms.

I also believe in courtesy, in knowledge, in hospitality, in the rejection of ignorance. I believe in chivalry, in good manners, in treating others as you would be treated. It is in that spirit that I have answered your post, preferring to believe that it was not intended to be as rude as it sounds.

I am on this forum by choice. I have been careful to abide by its rules, as I do on every board I have ever frequented. I do not believe I have said anything offensive to you, but if I have, please bring it to my attention so that I may apologize to you.

I hope you have a pleasant day!

Forgive me for "butting in". I understood the forum protocol to be open discussion--anyone can respond to any post at any time. I will try to do better. Your comment, though, however light-hearted, was insensitive to persons who suffer from anxiety and/or alcoholism. I would imagine that comments referring to Terri Schiavo as a carrot would be offensive to you--as they would to me--no matter how light-hearted the speaker might have thought he was being. My point was that folks on this thread speak of defending the rights of the disabled in many posts, yet you didn't see the contradiction in disparaging the rights of those disabled by mental illness/addiction. For those of us who live with those every day, there is nothing lighthearted or funny about it.

I didn’t intend my post to be an endorsement and I am sure you don’t see it as such. Duncan Hunter does better on the issues than the others I have seen, but I pointed out this effort as how the issue of Terri’s Legacy can impact the vote, and continues to do so. Both sides recognize her effect, positive and negative. In this case the Senator championed her and I bet he benefits from continuing it.

I hold the illegals issue very high on the list.

Duncan Hunter supported Terri loudly and clearly.

Follow on to the Brownback event...

One of Brownback's first campaign stops Saturday was at West Des Moines' Crossroads Fellowship Church. He was joined by Bobby Schindler, the brother of Terri Schiavo, who died in 2005 amid a national controversy over end-of-life issues. Schiavo spent 15 years in what doctors called a vegetative state and died after her husband won a fight to remove her feeding tube.

Schindler described his sister as someone who was "killed" because she was physically disabled and said she would have needed only a wheelchair to join the group at Saturday's campaign stop.

"Her life remained sacred to the very end," Brownback said. "Whether it's a child in the womb or it's somebody that has had a very difficult situation ... she nonetheless remains a person and she shouldn't be artificially, or by humans, terminated. Instead, we should protect these lives."

How others see it...

..............................

Brownbackhandout  Sen. Sam Brownback is touring Iowa this weekend with Bobby Schindler, the brother of the late Terri Schiavo, whose case created an uproar when some lawmakers in Congress, including Brownback, intervened to try to prevent her husband from removing life support.
This interference with what should have been a painful, personal family decision was a distinct low point for Congress -- and polls showed Americans overwhelmingly disapproved of the grandstanding by right-to-life lawmakers such as Brownback.
It’s hard to see how bringing up this shameful episode will broaden Brownback’s appeal.

Don't you love liberal writers? They don't know right from wrong, so they have to get their talking points from rigged polls and childish rhetoric.

Duncan Hunter supported Terri loudly and clearly.

Good to know that! I have no dog in this race right now, but I do like what I'm hearing and seeing about Duncan Hunter, more every week, in fact. I wasn't aware that he also did what was right by Terri.

While Brownback may have been a supporter of Terri, which is more than admirable and morally right, I also wanted it to be known what Brownback did recently.

IMHO, any person who changes their vote on such an important issue, especially knowing that 80% of the American populace is dead set against how he initially voted (for amnesty), tells you something about a person's character, too.

That Brownback changed his vote to be against amnesty and in line with want the people wanted, only when it became completely obvious the bill was going down in defeat, doesn't speak well about him as a person, a leader, or as a conservative, again, imho.

Thank you, 8mm, for keeping up with the Terri threads, championing similar causes in her memory. I often read them. Have a blessed Sunday!

Duncan Hunter and Sam Brownback have the highest passion for the life issue, although some of the other presidential candidates are pro-life, but don’t seem to have the commitment of these two fine men, imo.
