That's the question Bobby Schindler asked in the case involving Jesse Ramirez, the Arizona man whose case paralleled that of Schindler's sister, Terri Schiavo, until Ramirez woke up. The Arizona Republic reports:

...Bobby Schindler of the Florida-based Terri Schindler Shiavo Foundation placed the blame on a medical establishment quick to dismiss patients with brain injuries.

Schindler is the brother of Terri Schiavo, a brain-damaged Florida woman who died in 2005 after a decades-long court battle.

"What is the rush?" he asked. "This is not the first time we've heard of cases like this where doctors want to write off the chance of recovery, and the family, when they're told this, will make a decision to end a person's life.

"In the case of Mr. Ramirez, he'd be dead now."

Why is Jesse alive? His family sought legal intervention with the help of the Alliance Defense Fund:

His siblings and parents refused to give him up for dead, and today, Jesse Ramirez is alive and conscious.

Two weeks ago, he was the center of a family battling over of whether he should live or die.

Now, he can hug and kiss, nod his head, answer yes and no questions, give a thumbs-up sign and sit in a chair.

I assume you are trying to be funny here, but as a recovering alcoholic who suffers terribly from a clinical anxiety disorder and panic attacks, I don't find this remark humorous at all. One beer does not "cure" my anxiety. I should know; I spent 25 years or so trying that particular "cure" over and over again. Perhaps you did not mean to be offensive, or perhaps you simply don't know any better, but ridiculing mental illness is no less offensive than ridiculing any other disability. From what I have read on this thread, I would have expected better.

Not to worry. I just read a joke that’s kind of funny, unless you happen to be allergic to peanuts. I heard a rumor that T’wit is allergic to peanuts. (Ok, I made that rumor up.) So I’ll defend your honor by telling a peanut joke, and T’wit can be indignantly offended.

A man walks into a bar - he sits down and orders a drink. The barman gives him his drink, accompanied by a bowl of peanuts. To his surprise, a voice comes from the peanut bowl. “You look great tonight!” it said, “You really look fantastic... and that aftershave is just wonderful!”

The man is obviously a little confused, but tries to ignore it. Realizing he has no cigarettes he wanders over to the cigarette machine. After inserting his money, another voice emits from the machine. “You’re a TOTAL WANKER... My God you STINK... Do you know, you’re almost AS UGLY AS YOUR MOTHER!”

By now, the man is extremely perplexed. He turns to the barman for an explanation. “Ah yes sir,” the barman responds, “The peanuts are complimentary, but the cigarette machine is out of order.”

I laughed at the one beer thing. One beer would never have done me anything other than look for the next beer. But different folks react differently. Twenty two years ago, I nearly croaked from alcohol toxity, was in intensive care for three days. I haven’t taken a drink since, but it doesn’t bother me at all. We have a full bar for those who drink, and my wife has wine with meals.

But a mutual friend of many years ago stopped the same time as I and has spent her life until now “not drinking”. Every day is a battle with her. She could not handle visiting with us and seeing dust covered bottles here and there.

I am easily offended though, just don’t know what about. But I will know it if I see it. To be safe, just don’t make lutefisk jokes, or if you do, make sure they are good ones.

    Those were the words of tiny 3-year-old Jayla, describing to investigators how the man she called Daddy “bited my lip with his teeth,” whacked her ear with a belt so hard she bled and beat her when she peed her pants, according to a police report.
    Shocking details of months of horrific injuries emerged yesterday after Jayla’s mother, Jessica Silveira, 26, and her live-in boyfriend, Bryan James, 34, who is accused of biting and mutilating the girl, pleaded not guilty yesterday in New Bedford District Court.
    The gut-wrenching case history, laid out in a 14-page New Bedford police report, reveals that doctors, police and DSS workers long suspected Jayla was a victim of abuse, but failed to stop it until she was horribly mutilated.

 Silveira was able to evade a DSS social worker for months. Despite repeated attempts, the case worker was never able to observe Jayla in the home, said DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro.
    Silveira blamed Jayla’s wounds on cat bites, scratches and falls and told police that James only visited, but didn’t live with her, said Silva Rudman, a Bristol County prosecutor and head of the child abuse unit.
    “She misled everybody,” said Rudman, who ranked the case among the worse she’s seen. “This type of behavior is so inhumane, to bite a child’s face is mayhem.”
    James has a history of violating restraining orders and once bit his ex-girlfriend’s face and hit her in the face, according to court records.
    Sharon Wood of New Bedford, whose daughter once dated the girl’s biological father, was outraged yesterday at news of the abuse. “DSS knew this and nothing was done,” Wood said.
    She said the children often visited her, and called Jayla a “tiny thing” and a beautiful girl.
     DSS has come under fire in recent years for failing to stop the abuse of young clients.
    In the notorious cases of victims Haleigh Poutre and Rebecca Riley, officials had blamed the ability of abusers to deceive investigators. New Commissioner Angelo McClain was appointed in the wake of the firestorm over such cases.
    DSS workers and police first learned of Jayla’s possible abuse in January, when a dentist alerted police and DSS about the girl’s cut lip. Doctors who examined Jayla at the time also noted that the girl had a human bite mark on her arm.
    In the ensuing months, police allege that little Jayla was beaten with a belt and bitten on her lip, back and side.
    Jayla described to police how “daddy Bryan” punished her when she was “bad, bad, bad.”
     “He hits my ears, my nose and my neck,” Jayla said, according to the police report. “He bit my lip and he broke it.”
    Jayla was admitted to Children’s Hospital April 25 with a deformed, infected lip, deformed ears as a result of “repeated trauma” and human bite marks. DSS took custody of the girl and her 5-year-old brother May 3, while Jayla was still hospitalized.

In the face of the allegations, Silveira’s friends and family stood by her yesterday. “I don’t think she’s guilty of anything,” said her best friend, Lena DaSilva. “She loves her kids.”
    Jayla’s biological father, Eric Offley, 33, a convicted sex offender, last saw Jayla in December. He insisted Silveira is a good mom, and blamed her behavior on “having a controlling boyfriend.”
    James and Silveira will be held without bail until a dangerousness hearing on Wednesday.

Nicholas Tonti-Filippini, the ethicist who chaired the working committee that drafted the new guidelines, says although voluntary, they should help prevent any instance here of the legal bunfight that occurred in 2005 over the fate of US woman Terri Schiavo, in a persistent vegetative state since 1990.

Her case was dragged through the US courts, and even Congress, amid a bitter dispute between her husband and her Catholic parents over whether her feeding tube should be removed. Her parents had claimed there was still a slight hope she might improve, but she was allowed to die in March 2005 after the Supreme Court refused to intervene. An autopsy later showed her brain had shrunk markedly, and no recovery could have occurred.

Associate Professor John Olver, director of rehabilitation at Melbourne's Epworth Hospital, said brain injury patients were slow to recover and needed better access to physio services that were not predicated on quick results.

"We have had patients in nursing homes who have come back for some reason or other, and because someone realises they show small signs of improvement they end up back in mainstream rehab, and have been able to get out of those nursing homes.''

That certainly gets Monica Blackstock's support. "I would like to see more help available for people like Brendan, rather than being in nursing homes. Being in a family environment, with familiar things around them, is far better for them.

in upholding the federal partial-birth abortion ban, the court did defer to Congress, but not in the ordinary sense of allowing legislators to make a choice between competing values such as women's liberty and fetal life.

Instead, it elevated the medical judgment of members of Congress above that of doctors, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, which held that the banned procedure was sometimes the safest way to terminate a particular pregnancy.

That was a strange choice. As the Terry Schiavo case showed, Congress is not very good at playing doctor in politically charged areas.

Abortion is identified with women's rights just as the Civil Rights Movement was identified with equal rights for African Americans and other minorities. But is abortion really a liberal cause? July 5, 2007 (pop.org) - President George W. Bush has done much good for the pro-life movement. His judicial appointments, especially to the Supreme Court, have strengthened the cause of Life. He has made good on his promises to veto anti-life legislation, and we have no doubt that he will continue to do so. Bush generally listens when strong pro-life leaders like Representative Chris Smith and Senator Sam Brownback speak. There is no question but that Bush is fairly conservative where matters of traditional morality are concerned.

At the same time, as time runs out on his presidency, we ask the question: Has Bush done all that could be expected for the cause of Life?

Ronald Reagan, to whom all modern presidents are compared, had the ability to galvanize people. The "great communicator" forged what became known as the "Reagan Coalition"--an alliance of traditional-minded Republicans and Democrats, who were united in part by the cause of Life. This coalition has now splintered on the issues of war, immigration, and the proper role of government. The Life issues have been the big losers.
