Sharp Reaction to Immigration Bill's Defeat

By Manuel Roig-Franzia

Washington Post Foreign Service

Saturday, June 30, 2007; Page A18

MEXICO CITY, June 29 -- Latin America reacted with sharp disappointment Friday to the U.S. Senate's defeat of an immigration bill, a decision that Mexican President Felipe Calderón called "a grave error" and Salvadoran President Elías Antonio Saca said was "a pity."

Latin American governments have long hoped for a comprehensive reform package that would include guest-worker provisions and a route to legal status for the estimated 12 million undocumented migrants in the United States -- half of whom are Mexican. At the same time, the Calderón administration has tried lately to lower expectations, in the belief that immigration reform is unlikely until after a new U.S. president is elected in November 2008.

Mexican President Felipe Calderón said the U.S. Senate's decision would increase illegal migration and worsen conditions on both sides of the border. (By Eduardo Verdugo -- Associated Press)

The Immigration Debate The Washington Post's coverage of the immigration issue, from the politics of revising the nation's immigration laws to the impact of illegal immigration on the U.S.-Mexico border and the Washington region.

In an editorial published Friday, the Mexico City newspaper El Universal said it is "highly hypocritical that the United States admits migrants as peasants, but does not accept them as citizens. A state that sends troops to the Middle East to try to implant democracy and respect for human rights does not practice such supreme values in its own territory."

Now here is chutzpah...

In Guatemala, the newspaper Prensa Libre described the Senate vote as "deplorable" in an editorial headlined "12 Million Victims." The vote, the paper said, showed that the United States is "a country hostile toward immigrants."

I wonder if this Guatemalan newspaper also mentioned Guatemala's hostility towards it's own people? These countires south of the border are run like banana republic juntas yet they wonder why people are fleeing in droves?

What hypocrisy!

Mexican President Felipe Calderón called "a grave error"

Personally, I can’t see only half of the illegals being Mexican.

We should adopt Mexico’s own immigration laws. They’re more draconian than anything we’ve ever even attempted.

They want a US president to vote for “legal immigration” by legalizing what’s illegal now. And does a bandwagon of campaigners for corporations.

If you don’t want to be fooled again, e-sign Duncan Hunter’s petition. Then either nominate him, or if necessary, write his name in on election day.

On further reflection, I’ve decided to agree with this article. The only obvious solution is for those countries (especially Mexico) should beef up their border security (does it even exist?) and keep their people from being victimized by us horrible Americans.

I remember jumping through hoops and deadlines, and had to pay a bribe to get my legal residence in Guatemala. I don’t think Americans are reacting against Immigration but reacting against the illegality and undue process of law.

March them all back over the border, then build the fence, seal off the border, and end NAFTA. Then let's see how they like it!

The elites are irritated because they have realized that they have finally pressed the wrong button, and the American citizen population has woken up and roared. That definitely was not part of their plan!

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

I Like Ike.

The Fiscal Cost of Low-Skill Immigrants to the U.S. Taxpayer

"Reform" must conform to the following principles:

  1. Anyone who enters this country illegally must be forever barred from legal residency, let alone citizenship.
  2. The right to obtain legal residency in the US must be fairly rationed among all the world's nations, and must not favor those who happen to have the geographic advantage of having their native country located near the US. Residency must be granted based on a variety of factors, with self-sufficiency, useful talents and/or knowledge, and other economic benefits to the US taking precedence over other considerations. Race (as opposed to nationality) should NOT be one of the factors considered, in any way at all.
  3. Taxpayers must not be responsibile for paying the bills of immigrants they cannot afford to pay themselves. The rate of new immigrants must be controlled so as to not overwhelm the capacity of our infrastructure to absorb the increased population pressures.
  4. Those born to parents neither of whom are US citizens must not automatically become US citizens.
  5. Immigrants must learn to use English.
  6. And last, but not least: No reform is permissible until we prove we can a) remove the illegals who are here, and b) prevent new illegals from arriving.

Personally, I can’t see only half of the illegals being Mexican.

These numbers vary wildly. Most estimate we have 12-20 miliion illegals, of course we know it's closer to 20 million. Mexico has a current estimated population of about 105 million and the rest of Central America has another 40 million or so.

“a decision that Mexican President Felipe Calderón called “a grave error””

How about this Felipe. Why don’t we adopt your border laws? That would be fair, right?

Illegal alien. We’ve already tried the amnesty route, less than 40 percent of the illegals in country at the time even bothered to file the first part of the paperwork. They’re not illegal immigrants, they’re not undocumented immigrants, they’re illegal aliens.

As for the reaction of other countries? Where are their amnesty programs? Oh, right, only the US is supposed to do things like that.

Why can’t we get $42,000 of oil from Mexico if we spend $42,000 in public school to educate three of their dependent offspring?
Why won’t all those nations hand us the money they cost us to live here?

I’m sorry but the US should not be the release valve for your corrupt countries. Once again this goes to show you we are dealing with a latino culture that is far different than ours. The gaul of these banana republics chastising us for trying to uphold our laws.

This will be the #1 issue in the election of 08. Do not allow candidates to just spew out, “we need comprehensive immigration reform”. Spell it out.

Felipe the only thing that is a grave error is your corrupt, illegal drug ridden country.
