McCain’s Courage A rare American politician.

By Tom Coburn

As the American people, elected officials, and commentators reflect on the heated immigration debate that came to a temporary close in the Senate this week many will ask, and have asked, why U.S. Senator John McCain (R., Ariz.) staked out a position that may, in retrospect, be seen as devastating to his presidential ambitions. I hope the American people, at least, step back from the obsessive play-by-play pre-season election analysis and reflect on Senator McCain’s actions for what I believe they were: One of the purest examples of political courage seen in Washington in a very, very long time.

Okay, so the eminent member of the "gang of fourteen" and the "Keating Five" is courageous. That doesn't make any difference when he's as wrong as he has been on certain issues. I respect him for his military service/record, including the fact that he was a long- time POW under horrible conditions, but I don't respect him as a Republican senator or presidential candidate.

“and have asked, why U.S. Senator John McCain (R., Ariz.) staked out a position that may, in retrospect, be seen as devastating to his presidential ambitions.”

Why? Because he’s an idiot. I don’t care how “courageous” he is. We don’t need a courageous idiot in the White House who works against the sovereignty of this nation.

Who the hell still supports this guy????????

“Coburn is a stand up guy”

No doubt, McCain however crossed the line with me, it isn’t political courage to ignore “We the People” time after time and then act surprised when they get “upset” over that.

True Courage would have been out in public declaring a support for the current law (1986 and Duncan Hunter’s 2006 fence act) and then taking the hear from the MSM for doing that, he took the easy pandering way out, said nothing about enforcement and now is trying to have a really Conservative man cover his ass...

No thanks, I’ve seen his act before, won’t work.

It saddens me that so many commentators will judge Senator McCain’s actions by how his role in this debate will impact the next poll or fundraising report. Survival is not the highest virtue in politics. Sacrifice is the highest virtue. In battle we don’t ask which soldier was a success — the one who charged the hill and lives a long life or his friend beside him who falls and leaves a widow and children behind. Whether this week helps or hurts Senator McCain politically is not the point. What matters is that without courage, we all lose.

I agree with Tom Coburn. McCain's firm stance in opposition to the majority of the American people is far better that the weasel Sam Brownbeck's vote switch when it became apparent that the amnesty bill was going down in flames.

I don't question McCain's courage. I question his judgment. And his judgment on this issue (and others) have show him unfit to be President.

That notwithstanding, I still think he would make a decent Secretary of Defense.

You people kill me. McCain is probably my least favorite current candidate for President but it doesn’t bother me that Coburn (one of the leaders of the fight against the Senate amnesty legislation)wanted to point out that it took a certain degree of something. Call it courage or nerve or even temerity but to antagonize the very citizens you are asking for votes is certainly out of the ordinary.

Dr. Tom is a very stand-up guy — just cannot figure out this editorial. BTW I made over 10,000 calls for him in 2004.

True courage, but real and true on the wrong side, and that is the salient point.
I’m sure Salazar and Jorge like it immensely.

Getting up in front of his constituents, the voters of America, and the entire world, in front of the media for all to see and say that Americans would not do farm work for 50 dollars an hour is a glimpse into elitist stupidity.

I see how he got the nickname Insane McCain. - He earned it

Yes, Coburn is one fine Senator for the GOP. I just hate to think that this might portend the McCaininization of one great Senator from the OK state a la Grahamnesty. Hopefully, it is just an honest evaluation without any downtrend in Coburn’s inclinations.

So, Coburn's saying that someone like McCain, who continually spearheads legislation that undermines the fabric of both the constitution (CFR) and the country (comprehensively awful immigration reform) should be applauded because he has the "political courage" to make monumental mistakes?

No thanks -- we've seen more than enough of the same "courage" in the White House this past month, and we're not buying, in spite of this love letter to a fellow member of the 100 Club.
