BRUSSELS, Belgium - One hundred journalists and other news media workers died on the job in the first six months of the year, putting 2007 on the path to becoming the deadliest year for the news business, the International News Safety Institute said Friday.

Iraq has been the most dangerous country for journalists in recent years, and the group said the 100-mark was reached with a death there Tuesday — the killing of Hamed Sarha, a 30-year veteran of the Iraqi national news agency by unidentified gunmen.

According to statistics compiled by the Brussels-based group, 83 journalists and 17 other media professionals died around the globe covering news stories between Jan. 1 and June 26, with 72 of them slain.

Funny, no journalists covering the Amish or Vatican have died. Really weird

LOL!! I'm sure it's entirely a mathematical coincidence of the highest order.

You are the only "journalist" I have ever encountered who thinks that what they do has no effect on the knowledge and attitudes of the American people. If that is what you really believe, why do do you do whatever it is that you do?

As for this ol' redneck Texan out here in the Piney Woods being an "elitist" -- LOL!!! I guess I just got a "promotion"... Thanks! (I guess...)

ROTFLOL!!!

J school graduates are hardly “journalists”.

“Sounds like you might have a case of PTSD over something you read about in our glorious, unbiased press.”

If I do have PTSD, I have a reason. Unlike you, I was in Vietnam. I also knew CW2 Hugh Thompson and I served under MG Peers when he was the 4th ID CG. Both honorable men.

“Sounds” to me like you are defending both the actions of LT Calley and his men, and the cover-up conducted by the command of the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal). Despicable.

I have no idea where you are getting the idea that I am a journalist, but I take it as a compliment.

Most are working for the enemy. I lose absolutely no sleep over the demise of these traitors.

Anyone who thinks the press has acted honorably reporting this war belongs over at DU.

No regrets here. They along with their allies in the congress have betrayed this country and are responsible for the deaths of many of our soldiers. They can burn in hell.

Americans are fighing and dying to defend a constitution that you don't deserve the protection of.

You could always gather your own news.

And then sell it to AP as real. Poof; instant credibility!

Good go over to DU where you’ll find a lot more sympathy for your point of view.

Much, if not most, of the press has gone to great length to carry the propaganda water for our enemy.

There has been a concerted effort by many in the press to misinform, partially and selectively inform but rarely to fully inform our citizenry.

They have failed to earn the custom of protection our culture and laws provide them.

The industry refuses to police itself. It refuses to act with any honor during this time of war. Too many in the press find it their duty to chip away at our will to fight against the islamists and actively work to erode our will to succeed at the current main front of this war in Iraq.

There is no excuse for this. There is no forgiveness for this. They have made themselves enemy and as enemy they should be treated.

There is nothing, anywhere, in our Constitution which allows for a citizen to give his or her loyalty to those forces with which we are engaged in war.
There is nothing in our Constitution which demands that I or any other citizen feel grief for enemy propagandists, no matter what nation they are from, when they are killed.

Where in the Constitution does it defend the right of the media to give aid and comfort to the enemy?

Would you invoke censorship on the American news organizations?

Censorship? Nope.

Those that have indulged in actions and activities designed to be beneficial and supportive of our enemy are our enemy and should be treated just as any other enemy.

The press has refused to police itself as an industry. Eventually, once things go too far and the rage breaks loose, the policing will be done.

It is not something I particularly look forward to happening but the pattern for such issues is well established in the histories of other cultures and nations which faced an existential threat and suffered betrayal by those who’s trust was most needed.

That begs too many questions, and, unless you are advocating vigilante action, you're talking about censorship and or penalties imposed by the government.

Twist it how ever you wish. The meaning of what I said was clear.

Those in the press who have acted in the best interests of our enemy, by law and tradition, are considered equally as enemy.

There are laws on the books that forbid and give guidance on the punishments appropriate for such crimes...
http://www.access.gpo.gov/uscode/title18/parti_chapter115_.html
But the powers that be refuse to adhere to them and they go unenforced.

This allows the bad actors to drift farther and farther from any real constraints on their behavior and as such things go, they never end well.

I am not advocating anything. I am only attempting to describe a possible outcome, much deserved btw, for those who have worked to force the US into a defeat that no armed military force on this planet can achieve.

Why you continue to stand up against all who express outrage at the long and deep track record of outrageous acts and actions by the press does beg the question of you, sir.

Why?

There has been no force available to the jihadi that is as effective in assisting them in reaching their goals as our own industry of journalism.

why are you so strident in their defense?
